I can't stress enough to everyone how important it is to have all of your paperwork in order even if you're just contemplating divorce, and especially when in the beginning of it.  By paperwork I mean tax records, deeds, insurance policies, bank statements, that kind of stuff.  I went into the old tax records to pull something out that his attorney wanted, even though I knew stbx had copied all of the tax records.  I found that he had taken the originals and left copies.  Ok, so not such a big deal, till then I started seeing he mixed the years up.  Now I don't trust that any of the paperwork is complete any longer.  He may have taken stuff out and not put it back in or it may be that he's just that incompetent.  Likely the latter.  

Luckily, I had pulled all of the other important stuff and moved it or made copies for myself.  I couldn't risk him taking or destroying bank records.  I spent much of the last 9 months pulling together a huge forensic accounting of our financial picture over the last 4 years, and now I guard that paperwork with my life.  I put a glass candle jar at the door so that when I'm sleeping, if the door opens wider than what a cat needs to squeeze in, I'll wake up. If I shower when he's home, I take it into the bathroom and lock the door.  I take it to work with me.  When I run in the basement, it's with me.  The only time it's not safeguarded properly is if I'm doing yard work or running outside.  Then I go to the less secure plan B.  I'm not paranoid I'm just being practical.  Pissed off stbx's are unpredictable.

I recommend doing the following:  scanning the documents to a safe, secure computer, one that's password protected and that ideally is portable.  Also back up everything on a thumb drive, keep that drive separate from the computer.  Email what's essential to your lawyer or a friend.  Some people put that stuff up on a google drive, but that's too risky for my liking.  Print out hard copies and keep at least one set off-site (friend, relative, safe place at work, fallout shelter).

Divorce cases are very document heavy.  Proof is king, and you need to keep your king safe!!

Also, ladies, if you have a nice engagement ring, keep that safe with your thumb drives.  That item was a gift to you, so it's yours to chose what to do with.  Personally, I want to hock mine to help pay for a trip with my boys to Hawaii.
