The wife and I are suppose to tell the kids next Friday about us separating. We have been working to make the transition...especially me because I am the one moving out and going to go live at my moms house that was empty. The trouble that starts to hit me now knowing it basically a week away is when I am playing or hanging with my children and things are fun with that (for example, playing XBox with my son) and then start to feel bad about knowing what is coming next week with breaking the news to them. Makes me want to take the easy road and want to protect them by not wanting to have the conversation with them. Has anyone that was separating go through something like that? If so, how did you handle it?

I am sorry you are feeling this way. My soon to be ex husband and I sat down with our oldest separately and told her. She seems to understand what is going on. She seems ok. What I think helped ( not sure but maybe) was that her dad moved into our spare room and then a couple of weeks later he moved out. He still sees them at night during the week. We are try really hard to keep this somewhat the same. Your kids might already know something is going on but not really sure what that is. This talk will only get harder the longer you wait. but you know what is best. I don't know how things are between you and your wife but your kids will need you to be there no matter what. You will have to take the high road and keep the peace as much as possible. I have had to think A LOT before I spoke even though sometimes is didn't work. Not sure if will help but good luck. Stay strong.

I can also say that therapy has REALLY helped me get through this I strongly suggest you go talk to someone just to get advice to handle this with your kids. Mine has really explained to me how to make it easier for my kids.

Thank you. How old was your oldest again? How old is your youngest? Mine are 11 and 9. I think my 11 year old may not be surprised completely. Not sure how my son will take it. I know that things will not change with the wife and I. I keep telling myself that the kids deserve better and should not see our marriage as the template for theirs. Just very knowing the day is coming closer and closer, especially when you have fun moments with them leading up to it.

My oldest is 9 and my youngest is 3. I thought the same thing about me and my husband, I thought things would not change and unfortunately they have. Kids also I think, now a days know a few friends that have divorced parents so they see things are OK,

Take each day by day and enjoy the happy ones. That is the only way i get by. How much will you be able to see your kids after the separation?
