I have been living in this house for 17 years and the association is responsible for landscaping and other maintenance.
For way too long I have been asking for better care for the plants that embrace my home. They have been neglected, mistreated, trimmed without love or proper care, no fertilizers, no fresh plants, just the same whatever that was put there when the condominium was created. My claims were never addressed.
That was true until yesterday. I drove by a landscaping crew from another nearby association, got their phone number, contacted the company and asked them for an estimate. They came today, removed all the dead plants and prepared the bed soil for fresh plants that will come in a week. All that in less than 1/2 hour.
The process made me think of how long we wait for others to do what is right, when sometimes the solution for our own happiness is a quick decision made that can bring a rewarding feeling of accomplishment.
Using the same approach, I pulled from my heart a few dead roots that I kept dead for too long and with it, I am preparing the area to plant new seeds. Seeds of happiness.
I hope this can be inspiring to you too.

i moved into a new apartment six months ago. out front, there was one small, sad looking shrub. i walked past that pathetic thing a million times. finally, i thought, you have to go. so, i bought a nice Koreanspice viburnum that not only looks nice and healthy but it will bloom in the Spring and the blossoms are fragrant. now, i am thinking of going out and buying some Spring flowering things like tulips.
as a renter, it is wasted money i suppose. but, it is home too after all.
so, what kinds of plants are going in there, CMondo?
If we don't do anything or wait forever for someone else to do what should be done to begin with, we are the ones who put the chain on our own feet.
Rent or purchase, home is home. If we pass by a corner a million times, and there is something right there that makes us smile - that, by itself, is worth everything!!! We will smile a million times, every moment we pass by it.
I am told that impatients will be best because they are colorful and last a bit longer when it starts cooling down. I guess once I see the new plants I may start changing the flowers every now and then.

I live in a condo with some great landscaping, but my balcony has 7 or 8 pots in it, my impatiens are still hanging on altho theyre spindly now, but I brought home some mums from my school's greenhouse last week. I have 2 black thumbs, and am always so envious of you guys and gals who can plant and nurture in those special ways that make plants thrive. I put 2 little pots of basil in my window sill, they're dead today, the a/c killed them I think...poor things.
I hope there's lots of luscious greenery in all your futures :)
i prefer perennials and bulbs because they bloom every year and are pretty low maintenance. impatiens and pansies are great annuals for color. for a rosebush, one of the best and easiest is called "Knockout."
@Joy: anyone can learn basic gardening. there's tons of info on the web and your county extension service has lots of information too.
when it comes to thinking of ways to deal with the loneliness of singledom especially when we are first abruptly abandoned, besides pets, plants can really help as can soft background music. there are many things that we can do for ourselves to soothe our spirits.
