I think Cops have you beat.....

I am a teacher but currently not working. I have been a stay at home mom this past year. I really don't think it has to do with the teaching profession but maybe the spouses we marry.

I agree w/angel. There's a perverse mentality about them (cops) I think. My STBX is in corrections (couldn't handle the REAL deal), just wanted a badge & to play with his guns! Not too familiar with the teaching profession.

I am an elementary teacher and recently divorced. I'm not sure if there is a high rate among our profession. I work in a large building and there is only a few of us divorced. I had such a hard time with my divorce because of that. However, my lawyer who handled my divorce last summer said that he had quite a lot of teachers as clients who were seeking a divorce. I know for myself it was my personality that led to my divorce and not my profession. I always see the good in people and believe in them. My x was not a good choice for a life partner.

I'm not sure the divorce rate is higher for teachers, but a lot of teachers become so involved, all their friends are teachers, teaching is all they talk about, and their spouses get left out.

I have a life outside my job, had interests in common with my stbx, but she left me to get back with her ex. I don't think you can make someone committed if they are not. Another reason it is important to choose carefully.

I agree with 34hope. Teachers are usually nuturing and see positive in people. My job rarely came home with me. My STBX is in bussiness/sales and his job was 24/7. He has way too much freedom to do what he wants during work hours and always on the phone even when he was at home. I trusted him enough to not be concerned with what he was doing with his time. Boy, was I wrong!

Let's face it the national divorce rate is high. The problem is we are all being feed this line about "true love" and "soul mates" and the myth of "happily ever after". There is no such thing and when stress enters the equation a relationship takes some knocks- the more stressful your life (career) the more blows you take.

Yea, I'm a teacher - but so is the stbx...so we make the rate go hgher with one split.

I'm not sure its the profession, but who we are married (or were) to. We learn to be dedicated and put children's needs before all others. Most people aren't that way so they think 'me' 'me' and usually it leads to lack of respect for marriage vows and other commitments. Only 1 divorced man in my district who is still single and I'm trying to snag him.. we've dated. Good Luck!

i think nursing beat the teaching profession in regards to the divorce rate.

I am commenting on this and I haven't read any of the replies.... But, I believe teachers aren't paid much more than a fast food worker...okay that's a little stretch.. but mostly the issues are money. Teachers are stressed to no limit with no pay. Our educators are one of the most prominent people in our youths lives and they are paid the least.

Does it cause stress on a relationship.. I would believe so.

If you think about the fact the over half of all marriages end in divorce then most of the people you know should be divorced or on a second or third marriage. I don't think it is necessarily the profession just the statistics.

I think it probably just seems like its this way in your profession. There are just as many housewives that get divorced due to cheating workaholic husbands so I doubt one profession has any other beat. :-(

Here is a teacher of 20 years and I am separated now but will divorce.

I'd never heard that, but add me to the list of "divorced" (or in my case, will be soon) educators. Maybe since you are divorced you just happen to notice more people in your profession who are. Honestly, I think divorce is an equally opportunity crisis.
