I'm visiting the hometown of Day-twah, I mean Detroit, next week. Its been rumoured that there is wine grown in upstate NY and even Ontario that could be good. You should know that I lived in California, in Wine Country, for a number of years, so if you are going to make a recommendation, well, tell me what you like, since I'll have a good chance to check it out.
I usually prefer reds over whites, but will try a decent chardonnay, as long as it isn't to tart or harsh. I like the smoother whites, more buttery, like the Grgich Hills, or La Creama. I tend to stay away from the sweeter whites like white zin or white cab.
ON the red side, good cabs, syrah, pinot noir. But good, not the vintners reserve, something much more complex.
So let er rip, and I'll let you know what I think assuming of course that I can find these in Detroit.

2005 was a pretty good year in Niagara.
Henry of Pellham makes a very decent Baco Noir.
The hillebrand Trius I mentioned before has the buttery and vanilla notes your after.
