The Bugle Call "Taps", very stirring. The Bugle call, extends the soldiers day at sun set. For some, killed in action Taps ended their physical time on earth. Taps is sounded at days end, at every military station, over the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, over the Battleship Arizona, at the the grave of a fallen comrade and on Memorial Day.
Taps is not a funeral song because it is not a sad song - - rather a prayer. They are the words of a soldier simple and direct written by General Daniel Butterfield and his Assistant Bugler Oliver Norton in 1862 during the Civil War.. (Condinced words for the Field Soldier):
"Day is Done, Gone The Sun.. From The Field, From The Hill, From The Sky. All is Well, Safely Rest. God is Nigh".
American War Casualties:
Civil War: 498,332; WWI: 116,707; WWII: 407,316; Korean War: 54,246; Vietnam War: 58,655; Persian Gulf War: 269; Iraqi War: 4,278 (Combat Related). POW/MIA's: in excess of 2500.
In the past two hundred years, over one million American's have died for this country. Monuments have been built, speeches have been delivered and a National Holiday was granted to HONOR these American Heros....

My Dad's dad was killed over Bremen, Germany in WWII. Obviously, I never knew him, but neither did my Dad (born 1942). I always take to time to remember.

I was at the Arizona while serving in the Navy.
I can tell you that there has never in my life been a more "chill me to the bone feeling" and completely overwhelming feeling, then to stand over those that are still entombed down there.
It's just something I will never forget.
It's our history and it will, unfortunately, be our future as well. We will see sons and daughters go out there and die.
I pray on this day for peace... peace that brings the world together and shows everyone that we are all human... having 2 legs and 2 arms and 2 eyes... we all have hearts and souls. We might believe in something different and look slightly different. But we all live on this earth... and we all have basically the same outlook on life... to live well and to live long and happy.
someday... I hope in my lifetime... this will be realized and we won't loose anymore children to war.

I had many high school and law school friends who never made it back. We had a memorial to them at our class reunion.

For each soldier that has fallen so that many may stand
We honor their spirit as they pass to God's hand
For without their sacrifice we would live forever in fear
We pray for their loved ones and provide a salute and a tear
God help us heal the wounds of hate and the misery of war
That is our gift to our fallen heroes that are amongst us no more.
