Ok my stbx has offered to help me move into my new place and just help me out in general with getting things in order and has been nice even though this is all his choice to separate. I am trying to be strong and nice back for the sake of my son, his step son but who has been the only dad he has known. Anyway my mother hates my stbx and thinks i should just cut him out of both of our lives. I get that she is trying to protect me because he really only wants to be around because of my kiddo. I don't know a nice way to tell her to butt out, she has a history of disowning me if don't do what she thinks is right. But at this time I don't have any close friends that i can turn to for advice locally and I obviously can't go to my husband for advice.
I don't know what to do because he gives me hope that the space will help our relationship and that he is going to wait on getting the paperwork started for the divorce. Just a lot of mixed signals and there are times i would rather just stay in the dark about what is going to happen next because I would rather have him in my life in some capacity then not at all. Im sure that will change later on but if there is any chance of reconciliation i want it and don't want to push him out of our lives. I just don't know what to do. I can't make anyone happy but myself and my son but either way I piss someone off I just want my mom to be supportive of my choices and be there no matter what i choose. This is hard enough as it is and I don't need her added stress but I can't tell her that.. I don't know what to do or if I am just freaking out for no reason.

One thing I have learned in life is that you have to do what makes you happy and if people love you then they will just have to accept your choices. It's your life and no one elses. Yes people may just be looking out for you, especially your parents, but in the end you can't live the life they want you to live. I have done that for the past 33 yrs and wish I had had the guts to live the life I wanted. Never too late though....

We had a discussion in past day or two regarding family and friends. Was titled, why must our family and friends tell us what to do. You are not the only one going through that. My family is very verbal and critical of everything I do and don't do. Listening to the responses helped. In the end it is our lives, we must do what our HEAD and HEART tell us to.. At this point i'm still listening to my heart even though my head is 100% right. There will come a day when we can listen to both and will be a lot happier in end.

It's your life and you need to do what works for you, not what works for your mother. You're also a parent and therefore your first obligation is to your son. If this man is the only father your son has known, he poses no threat to your son and he wants to be in your son's life, you should let him. That being said, you need to protect yourself. Don't let yourself be taken on an emotional roller coaster ride by his mixed signals. Unless or until he has something definite to say about your relationship, try to limit your contact to discussing your son.
