I waited years and years for changes from my ex that he just was never going to make. Never, ever, despite all his promises or should I say lies. He hasn't changed, stop wasting your time with him, you don't owe him a lifetime of waiting.
I'm sure it was shocking when he turned violent that one time after 10 years together. Unfortunately, a line has been crossed and the violence will just escalate now if you get back together. You'll get to know the pattern - maybe he'll start by being distant for a while, then explode about something trivial, then apologetic and wanting to make it work for a while. I wonder why you think your family would turn on you if you told them you're considering divorce? Do they not know he tried to choke you? Do you somehow believe it was your fault?
If you profile info is correct, you are 25yo. You have been with him for 10 years, so you started dating at 15yo. Teen-agers, just kids.
And y'all grew comfortable with each other, the relationship became very familiar and normal. You were all each of you knew. You being together was your comfort zone. So if only makes sense that as you progressed from dating during high school to dating as young adults to the next logical step - marriage.
But it appears that marriage was a little too "real" for your husband. Perhaps he realized that dating you for 10 years was well and dandy, you aren't the one he wants to spend the rest of his life with. And it is better to figure this out now than when you are another 10 years older and have children to boot.
When my first husband and I got married, we had dated for about 2 years, were good friends, have fun together, etc, so marriage was the next logical step, especially since so many of our friends were also getting married. But there was no great passion. About 8-10months into the marriage, we separated. We should have read the writing on the wall. But we got back together, tried to make a go of it, started a family, etc, only to be divorce by our 11th anniversary.
Interestingly enough, many of the friends that married when we did also divorced during those first 10-12 years.
So what I am saying is read the writing on the wall. I don't necessarily think your husband is a bad person (one-time violence not withstanding); he is just a bad husband to you. Go off with your life and find the right husband for you and let him for the right wife for him. And chalk this up as a learning experience.
All my love lloyd. X x
Good luck! I wish you all the best.
