I could really use some emotional support right now. I realize people are going to tell me that I "dodged a bullet" with this one. I realize that our relationship may not have been healthy. Yet I still feel I have so many questions, most of which I know only time will answer.
My fiance and I have had a rough start. He was always short on money when we lived together and we did drink more than we should. I quit drinking weeks ago because I thought it would better our situation. He still drank every night, and while I know this doesn't make anything better, he did cut back on the amount.
My fiance was stressed, which of course caused stress in our relationship. He had broken off contact with his family for months, though last Monday his father emailed him to invite him to their Thanksgiving. I could tell this was on his mind. There was a lot on our minds. Since his job was seasonal, we planned to move temporarily to my family's cabin on Wednesday and that would have solved the money issue. We both talked about cutting back on drinking, I just decided to quit early to ease my stress with moving. I got my job to allow me to telecommute for the winter so my paycheck alone could support us until he found work.
The week before we were moving, my fiance had what I assumed was an emotional breakdown. He got so angry so easily and then got worse. He said things to me I had never heard before, and then he said some more. This went on for hours. At first I fought with him, I felt I had to explain myself, but he was so unreasonable that eventually I allowed him to blow off some steam. By morning, he was crying and apologizing for his actions and he felt he'd regret that night forever. I was hesitant, but I did forgive him. By Monday we were talking about our future and spending the holidays together. Though he was distant and I assumed this had something to do with his father contacting him after so many months. It was a general email and my fiance did not reply as far as I was aware.
The next day, Tuesday, he was cranky when he got home from work. He was unable to get a trailer for our move the next day. I thought this was bothering him but then he told me he wanted to break up! Of course I was upset, though we didn't argue very hard for very long. He left the apartment to call his father.
Hours later he comes home saying his family got him a hotel room where I wouldn't be able to find him. I didn't understand. I told him we could talk about this, he told me it was too late. I was hoping this would be another episode like Wednesday, but at the same time not because I don't want to live that way if it would continue.
Wednesday after work I saw that he had left everything in the apartment for me to move myself, I was of course upset and sent him a text asking what's going on. Later he sent me simple a text saying he loved me and would always remember what we had, though he'd like to talk about the apartment but also that he was too busy. I haven't heard from him since.
I went to my parents' that night (where we planned to stay for just a few days before heading to our new place) and was a wreck. I did attempt to call him on Thanksgiving, attempted to sound as calm and collected as possible, and told him I'd like to figure out what's happening and what I should do about his things. Still nothing.
He was close to my father, and my father was just as shocked not to hear anything from my fiance, so he tried calling on Friday. My father spoke to his, and it turns out my fiance said I was physically abusing him and that I owed him money! My fiance had punched a hole in my bathroom door when he had his emotional fit recently and he told his father that I did it, when previously my fiance had been so sorry about it and agreed to repair it!
I didn't want to cut my fiance off, but I was also informed that my fiance did not intend to pay for his cell phone (I am head of the family plan, so he is not legally obligated) so I had to halt the service. I'm sure he is incredibly angry with me now, but I didn't know what else to do.
I have left him alone since this, but it is killing me. I feel as if he made up a lie during an emotional moment to get back in good graces with his family, but it was such a great lie that he cannot come back from any of it. I cannot believe he left me with his things, the apartment, the rent (we were not able to reassign the apartment yet but have had a lot of interested people), the phone bill, and is leaving it all up to me.
If he dislikes how his family acts as much as he has said, I wonder how long it will take for him to become dissatisfied with his new living arrangement. I wonder how long it will take him to feel terrible for the giant lies he told about me. I wonder if he'll get back to drinking more heavily, though I can only imagine his family will then notice, and I'm sure he'd rather stay on their good side. I wonder if he'll try to contact me. I can only imagine this is hurting him, even if he is currently upset with me. I think there is a good chance he won't try to contact me after I put a halt on his phone service, but he has to realize the position he put me in. He has to. He's always understood and acknowledged the day after an argument if he may not have done or said some things right the night before.
Will he recognize and regret that he was only a day away from answering many of our problems? Will the thrill of hanging out with his old high school buddies he hasn't seen in years eventually lose its charm because he spent so many years with the comfort of being with me? He put himself in a terrible financial situation, because I know his parents always pushed him toward independence and stopped providing for him after college, so will he want to use me once the money runs out?
I apologize for the long post, though I appreciate greatly those of you that have read this. I feel so confused. Most people don't throw away serious relationships over one or two days. Especially not like that.

It's not good to have someone kick up dust to camoflage the real problems and i believe that's what he did. It may be that cutting back on drinking is at part of this. Another part may be that he didn't really want to give up his family. There may be more that you'll figure out when time goes on.
That he has to go home and tell whopper lies about you and refuse to pay his part of the cell phone bill and refuse to talk to you about getting his belongs, and re-renting the apartment---this isn't someone you want to deal with any more in your life. This is the type of person you learn is no good for you in crisis and you get away from them and don't go back to them.
You're going to have to suck up the cell phone bill, but it was good that you turned off the service. Work with the landlord, explain he up and left for good, and get the apartment re-rented.
That he left his stuff there and won't respond to communicate with you about it isn't your problem. But since he left you with bills, you could have a yard sale and sell everything and then use what you receive to cover his part of the cell phone bill or any other bill and anything over it, send it on to him. But hold onto documentation of the bills, and make a list of each item you sell and what you sell it for so you can prove that you sold the items and the amount sold. Then you show that you paid bills in that amount.
Good luck and many hugs.
It seems like he got overwhelmed with the situation and just bailed in order to not have to deal with it. He left everything up to you and used you as the reason so he can move back with his families help at your expense. I am sorry.
What will you do if he comes back around? I am hoping it isn't the answer I am afraid you will have. I mean, you can make all the excuses you want for his behavior, but given the history and now this final act, at some point you have to stop the insanity and look out for yourself.
I am one that believes people make mistakes. I look at their past and other factors in order to try to understand why they may do some of the things they do during a relationship with me, or in general. But you can only forgoe so much. there are limits to what you will allow someone to do to you or how they will treat you. Meaning, no one is perfect and relationships take work. if you truly care, you try to work thru the crap and come out on top. But an issue lies when only one is taking all the crap and the other continues to put it on. That only one is working towards a positive end result and the other continues to use what ails them from their past or even current experience and not make any progress to show the other person they care enough to stop the insanity out of respect and love for that person or the relationship. It is at that time, where one needs to realize you just need to save yourself, all the heartache and gray hairs if the other person doesn't want to or can't come along with you.
its unfortunate and sad to say the least. but its your life, heart and mind that you need to protect. So you need to recognize your limits and stick to them so to be able to live as happily as you can. I am sorry but you gave what you could and he bailed cus he couldn't give no more.
tough ... tough... tough situation, but put your limits in place and protect yourself.
I am sorry
Welcome to the group
I know this because I had a boyfriend in my past that hurt me in a similar, but less vicious, way. I went to lunch one day, and when I came home he was gone and left everything behind. He was on his way to his hometown several states away. My now-ex-fiance always thought it was horrible, but when he left on Tuesday he said my ex was right for doing this to me. Well I couldn't have been that bad, because that ex came running back as soon as I moved on.
I thought I learned something from my past relationship, and I certainly think I did, but I did not learn how to see into the future. I have enjoyed helping people when they're having a rough time, but I never expect them to be so unappreciative.
Do listen to AsTimeGoesBy: at this point, you need to suck it up and take a proactive stand and get your financial and housing situation in order. The fact that this guy can just up and leave, leave you hanging with the moving and bills, is verbally (and potentially physically) abusive etc., shows the man he is.
You don't want a guy like this in your life.
One other comment: I really commend you for reducing your drinking, but you may have to seriously look at how your drinking may be attracting these types of guys. Alcoholics will look for people who will support their addiction by drinking with them and supporting them while they drink. It may be time for you to get into some counseling and talk about this and how it may be affecting the relationships you get into.
Sending healing hugs! Please remember that you deserve better in your life.
Today is the first day I woke up feeling alright. I am still shocked he would go this far, but I feel fine that he is gone if this is who he wanted to be. He had a chance to make some changes in our lives together only a day away with our big move, but he chose to land himself further away from everything he loves in a moment's notice.
Here's to many more days waking up and feeling Ok if not great about where you are.
He came over for the weekend to help clear out what's left in the apartment. He didn't do as much as he said he would, but to be fair we spent a lot of time reconnecting. It had been only a little over a week apart so it didn't take much time. We were able to discuss some difficult subjects without getting upset at one another. We didn't drink and things seemed like they could be repaired with time and effort.
The day he came to see me, he got a job hours away working in the oil fields. He will now be gone for two weeks, back for two weeks, then gone again. He says he wants to marry me still, that he feels bad for what he did, that he recognizes it was wrong. He says he wants to stay committed to me, but he doesn't want to go back to being engaged, he just wants us to remain "boyfriend and girlfriend." He's afraid of what his parents will think.
He wants to "do it right this time" and when we get engaged, he wants his parents to be more accepting of me. He wants to save money by continuing to live with them, but visit me frequently the two weeks out of the month he's home. I telecommute, he knows I can go with him when he's on leave from work, but he's afraid.
I told him, that if he really wants to work on our issues, then it should be a together thing. Keeping me from his family will not show them that we are serious. Not to mention it's not their choice to make. I'm willing to support his career choice and wait for him while he's on the job, but I don't see the commitment he claims in saying he'll see me when he's not with his parents. I don't even know what that means.
I want to tell him "you either want me or you don't, it's not your family's choice to make" but I know better than to use those words. I know he's committed and I know he'll be with just me. But I deserve to be with someone that puts me first and wants to come home to me as much as possible, especially now that we have half the time we used to. I'm not against him going out with his buddies for awhile or needing to visit his family alone, but this isn't high school. I'm not afraid to face the difficult moments. If that means moving on to someone that's sure about me, then I guess that's just what I'll have to do.
I can go on and on, but the bottom line is, you should be with a "man" not a boy who is proud to have you by his side. Who will protect you and love you like a partner should be. Who wants a life with you and isn't afraid of what ANYone will think about your relationship. If you want to continue on like you are in high school then stay with him. Otherwise, you know what you need to do in order to have an adult loving relationship. I hope you can get there one day.
