Maybe he just meant what he says. That he is hoping that you are having a good day. Sometimes I think we try to read too much into every statement.
If you are like room mates, then room mates are usually polite to each other and that is what it sounds like to me..
Of course this is based on that one statement, I did not get to hear the delivery to see if any sarcasm was present or if it was a passive aggressive statement.
How did it make you feel when you heard it? Are you saying that you did not expect anything but secretly hoping that he would do something for your birthday?

And it's totally ok... this transitional stage is not fun.

If this is how he was in the past then maybe it's just him being him...

If not, then maybe he really doesn't know what he's supposed 2 do.
I know with me, my stbx and I have had a lot of awkward am I supposed to still _____ moments.

My birthday was on the 15th...he didn't get me anything. But then again he never does. It still bothered me but I got over it fairly quickly.

This is all assuming that you guys are indeed separated but still living together.

I don't think he said it with any ill intent. It just seemed out of place.

We are still married (not separated), but if he is basically choosing to not give me a gift or even a card, it seems a bit contradictory to then wish me a happy birthday.

As far as how it made me feel, I just felt confused. I didn't have any expectaton that he would give me anything. And I had a very good day.

When I think about it, maybe it isn't so confusing. His actions have never matched his words.

Maybe, deep inside, you had a tiny expectation... I relate, lived apart but in the same place for years, it is a limbo where everything is gray...

My husband and I live like roommates, too and I haven't expected gifts from him for years now. I think he may have told me Happy Birthday last month but I'm not sure. He did eat the last piece of my birthday cake....I do remember that! Hope you had a good birthday.....1961 was a very good year ;-)
