Being an avid hiker and backpacker in the past, I am very well aware of what to do and not to do when one loses their way in the wilderness.
When you understand you're no longer on the path you should be on, you stop. Take some time and calmly assess your situation. Under no circumstance should you continue to aimlessly wander in an unknown or uncertain direction. You'll only get further disoriented, making it harder to get back on the right path. Then bad things start to happen. Panic and poor judgement only compound the initial error.
The same holds true for navigating the wilderness that life can sometimes present us. We lose our way. We panic. We cease to recognize all the good things we were doing to keep us centered and grounded. We panic and even despair and fall into more desperate patterns and habits that only further remove us from the good place we might have been.
I'll tell ya, I've never been lost in the wild. I have an uncanny sense of direction and I'm not prone to panic or poor judgement. I remain calm and collected. Life isn't anywhere near as easy to navigate. ;-)
I definitely lost my way back in November, and I made all the wrong decisions. I allowed it to overwhelm me. I wandered aimlessly for two whole months, taking myself further and further away from all the great progress I had made.
Now I've calmed down. I've finally stopped. I'm assessing where and how I veered off my path and determining how to get back on track.
I can once again see all the familiar landmarks I identified and followed all Summer and into the Fall. Now it's just a matter of plotting my course back to those places. I can see my way back now. The forest is not all gloom and doom now! :-)

I feel strange, right now I know what I'm going to go through is going to hurt, but at the same time I was divorced once 15 years ago, and I came through it fine. I know I will... I just wish the process was more like ripping off a band-aid.
