My story or another's may not be as bad as a different individuals story, for example, abuse, molestation, harassment, etc, doesn't mean that I don't feel the pain or someone needs to make light of a situation. It's something a person is going through and doing their best to compensate. This post has nothing to do with anyone, in particular, here on this site, but I hear so much of "well at least you didn't have to deal with this..." etc, in reference to others, mostly. A word of advice, try not to minimize someone else's pain, if you can. Just listen and be supportive. Most of the time all anyone needs us an ear.

In all seriousness, that used to drive me crazy. Yes - there are always people worse off than us but you're right - it doesn't make what you are going through any less painful. The worst is the people who pull out the ridiculous comparisons ("at least you aren't a mother of 17 living in Sudan during a famine, etc"). I like to throw it back like, "But if I did have 17 kids in Sudan during a famine and was a woman and my spouse cheated, THEN you would be human and supportive, right?". lol

So very true. Those "as least you" statements are thoughtless, seem incredibly uncaring, and are often just plain idiotic.
