How long has it been? For me it's been 6 weeks and while I'm not devastated and can look forward, I'm still sad and think about him all the time. My situation is a little different than most, things weren't bad. They were actually better than they'd ever been and I had no clue this was going to happen. He has commitment issues (which I've learned a lot about through this) and his leaving had to do with what was going on inside his head, it didn't have anything to do with us. In some ways, that makes it harder. While I know now it was an impossible relationship from the get go (just in terms of anything permanent although the way things were going I thought it might be permanent) I don't know how to fall out of love with him. I think it would be easier if I could hate him but I don't.
I don't know how long it will take but that's probably the only thing that's going do it. I'm so sorry you're going through this. It's awful.

We have been seperated for a few years, but in that time I thought we were working it out. I got the bomb dropped on me about 3 months ago that he met someone, and I have been devestated. I guess I always thought we would get back together. Boy was I wrong.... I cannot seem to get him out of my thoughs.... He is everywhere... Even though I removed any shred of him from my house.

I hear you! I'm struggling with the same thing. I wish the good memories wouldn't torment me the way they do. I have bad memories too but it seems like the good ones seem to overpower the bad. It's like my mind is playing tricks on me. Just when I think I'm moving forward, I feel like I'm still stuck and can't let go. I am the one who divorced him and left him over a year ago but it still hurts.

I'm almost 7 months in, its been tough, its been hell and I don't wish this on anyone. Having said that, I can now look back and be grateful that I'm on this end vs the beginning of the end. It really just takes time. It takes patience, it takes tears, it takes attitude adjustments, it takes everything in us to make it.........but it does happen. Definitely not over night but it does slowly get better. Don't get me wrong, I still get weepy if anyone asks how I'm doing and I still have many down days, but honestly, I'm in a much better place then even a year ago! Hang in there, and take it from us oldies on here.....it does get better, hugs to you!!!!!!

I think it's common to go through periods like that. Personally I've had enough of thinking about someone who is the least bit hung up on me. I've started reading "How to Fall Out of Love." I need some behavior modification techniques. Everyone keeps saying that it will get better with time but I think I need to be proactive.

I'm going through the same thing and just trying to live with it. Like a friendly ghost.

But I had a thought today. The reason this is harder than most other breakups is that I let him consume my thoughts and my life almost every day. I was always sort of uncomfortable with that thought. I like to think at the very least I'm free of that.

Acknowledging that set me a little bit free today. Just a little. I'll take it.
