I hope the same happens to you soon. If not, then I would speak to a doctor about it. We can't function when sleep deprieved. This entire situation is difficult enough without adding in lack of sleep.
Good luck to you.
If I did wake and had a bad time getting those awful thoughts out of my head, it was useful for me to give myself a certain amount of time to think about them, intensely, and then to move on and force myself to think of something else. I'd tell myself "ten minutes for worrying/stressing/grieving/anger/whatever" and then I would make myself do a sort of "guided imagery" type exercise to get my brain going elsewhere. For me, it worked to imagine a storyline in my head, for example to imagine myself going on a vacation to a favorite place and walking along with my dog and doing various things. Nothing complex, just pictures and thoughts that I could turn into a bit of a story. Different people use different stories or imaginary scenarios; use what works.
Might be worth a try. And if you continue to have this problem for a prolonged time, consider the possibility of depression. Depression causes this a lot. Oh, and you didn't say if you drink or not, but alcohol will really aggravate early morning awakening, so definitely avoid that.
