How to start divorce proceedings

I was wondering if anyone could give me some advice about how to start divorce proceedings and finding a good attorney?

I would start with some internet research of laws in your state, and local divorce attorneys. Most attorneys offer a free consultation, so if youre not thrilled with the first one you meet with, you can find another.

Depending on what's at stake, you may or may not need an attorney. In my state, I could basically file everything online for about $50 and just take the paperwork to the courthouse and sign off on it. HOWEVER, I have a lot at stake so that's not an option like it would have been some 20 years ago. I am choosing an atty that was referred to me by someone who also went through a divorce. The atty is "fair". Doesn't stick it to your spouse, doesn't play games, just gets things settled in a "fair" manner. Best of luck in your hunt for the right atty.

Shine - I've been doing some research online this morning and found a good website for divorce attorneys:

and you like mentioned they offer free consultations so I've emailed a local one.

Spektater - I'm hoping to keep it as simple as possible which is why I thought getting an attorney would be best. I hope your attorney helps you getting things settled fairly.
