I have been married since 2002. Things have been bad for several years. my dh is not only verbally abusive but physically abusive. Every time i have tried to leave he blocks the doors and if i try to call anyone on the phone he will grab the phone out of my hand. we have been to councilling but that has not helped. he has issues with his anger and is supposed to be taking meds but he refuses to take them.
i need to get out of this relationship. i need to know what are the first steps for divorce. I was told to file for divorce and get a protection order at the same time. I have never been through this before and I need help. I know i need an attny but am not sure i can afford it. thankfully i do not have any children.

Please contact a domestic violence shelter in your area. They are equipped and knowledgable about getting you out of an abusive situation. They can also put you in touch with affordable attorneys or legal aid.
Do not let your husband know anything that you are planning. He sounds very dangerous. Make a plan. Do you have friends or family who will help you get away?
In the beginning my now ex was just going to do everything with her, but some idiot recommended another attorney, so we both were paying. I happened to see one of his statements, and even though we both earned about the same thing, he was getting charged twice as much, and I ended up with more.
I also agree with everything hurtinand... had to say.
