I was on post yesterday and was so happy to see that the soldiers only had to work a half day..but have to remember that half day of reprieve is only for these guys back home. Someone close to me is fighting right now if Afghanistan, and my ex husband will be deploying soon.
I hit a trigger last night when I unexpectedly found my ex husbands combat ribbons for his dress blues. It brought me to my knees for a short time...a lot of memories flooded back in.....and I thought the timing of this was ironic with the holiday.

Too many people in this country have forgotten what Memorial Day means -- they think it's a nifty day for BBQ-ing and getting a discount on a new flat-screen TV.
Here's to the memory of those who fought and died for us.
What I am not celebrating is the elephant in the room, the facts and hidden agendas of all wars the civilian population and the soldiers are not told. If we are ever to cease war, we really must swallow our pride and recognize that it is rare for any war to be about good guys and bad guys, freedom vs fascism.
Both world wars were primarily about competing empires. I was told like many in school it was about the assasination of dukes, the attacks of pearl harbour and the sinking of the Lusitania.
These brave men and women sadly did not die for our freedoms, they died so that one empire might triumph over another. And the resulting years may have been calm for the US and the UKm but all around the world democracy and freedom was being destroyed and repressed by the very people who preached such ideals - the US and UK. From South America to Vietnam we have tried to impose by force our doctrines. There has been no freedom, and no peace, and we, the taxpayers, have largely fitted the bill, whilst falling victim to a mainstream press full of lies by omission and deception.
When the U.S wanted to join the war, the people didn't. There was a draft / conscription - many tried to resist and conscientious objectors - over 15 000 were imprisoned. At some point the 'espionage act' was put in, making it illegal to criticize the war or hinder recruitment.
The 'real' history of these wars is littered with such uncomfortable truths. With all due respect, I celebrate only that the wars showed -some- mens willingness to fight for each others lives and freedoms, even if they were deceived. I do not celebrate the idea that they died for our freedoms. They did not. They were victims of a cruel era of empire - which still exists today, though is far less about land, and far more about dominating markets.
Still, may they rest in peace and may we realize that all wars are civil - for all men and women are bothers and sisters. Let's not condemn our children to more wars for the sake of national pride.
Then again, my firsthand experiences with this war are those that not may have had themselves. We take much too much for granted.
We are celebrating the bravery of those that fought in them.
