Hi everybody. I'm Steve and very confused and heartbroken tonight. I have read many posts here, it has helped to know I'm not alone in my feelings. Don't feel like I could give much advise, I'm not good at picking the right guys for me. I was partnered 31 yrs to the same man, from the age of 16. I fell really hard for him, madly in love, but the relationship was exhausting, he ended up many yrs into our relationship being diagnosed bi-polar and was a drug abuser. The entire relationship was spent partially in bliss, partially in hell. I had made it my life's mission to not give up on him even though everyone else had, and to save him from himself, even though realize now, he never wanted to be saved. He lived a double life, was so amazingly proficient in his keeping me in the dark. He was diagnosed with cancer in 07 with stage one cancer, Drs shook their heads when Mike went to stage 4 and passed within a year. Despite diagnosis in beginning . After funeral, long time friend and I were talking and come to find out Mike had never stopped abusing drugs, to my utter sadness. I went thru yrs of grief and feeling like such a fool. I was single for 5 yrs, finally getting myself together, peeking my head back out into life, when I met my new boyfriend. I was resistant, down right rude to him in beginning, I didn't want to fall in love again, especially with a devilishly handsome, charmer like him. He terrified me. I said no so many times, at his requests for dates, dinner, so on. Well I finally said yes, through his manipulation sand lies about who he was and what he was. I ended up falling madly in love with him. We just passed 2 yrs together and last week, I found some pill bottles way in the back of the cabinet, and my heart sunk. He had been acting weird " just like my former partner". Which made me sick, but, new boyfriend assured me it was just "PTSD" from my former relationship and that I needed to let go of the past and stop comparing him to my former partner. Well, the truth just came out this week, that he has been abusing drugs, even though I told him in the beginning that if he used drugs to stay away from me. I am financially comfortable, and I now doubt that he ever loved me, just used me as a support source and nurse and maid service. He has income, but I had more, and I spent a lot on us because I was so happy to be living again after being so sad for so long, so we travelled, stayed in fancy hotels, dined in lovely restaurants, and of course on my dime. I trusted him so much, and now I'm devastated. We talked tonight and he can't afford to move out on his own, yet, so we are working out a plan for him to stay, pay me rent and all his expenses while he looks for a better job. But deep in side I'm so hurt, sad, I love him and still do. I can't believe it, but I'm in love with him, and so badly want him to beg me to forgive him and promise to make things right. I realize that there is something wrong with me, that attracts these guys. Low self esteem or something. I do plan to seek help emotionally. By the way, I'm fine financially, didn't spend more than I could afford, but still just hurts. The way he acts is, " oh well, going out with friends, see ya later"! I'm so shocked at his coolness. Maybe he is on drugs now even. I feel like such a fool and idiot. But he was amazingly charming and sweet, and told me everything I wanted to hear too. Who does that to someone??? I don't get it! Sorry for venting, I just had to vent somewhere and too embarrassed to tell friends that we all got fooled again. All my friends loved him too and my family. I got used and abused again, and have to end this cycle. It's hard but I have to tell him goodbye. I guess I just can't admit I'm such a fool and he is really just a user and jerk.
I've been working up to it for some time now, but I finally broke it off for good about a month ago and started divorce proceedings. The final step for me was reading the book, In Sheep's Clothing by George Simon (I'm not promoting for him, it was just the antidote to his kryptonite for me).
It helped me see my STBX's behavior and core intentions in a whole new light. It seemed that once I realized that he might have a diminished capacity for feeling guilt and shame - which gave him free reign to 'use me' - then the feelings in my gut aligned with the logic from my head. There are other good learnings from this book as well (both about your partner, and yourself - e.g. why you stay).
I'm also planning to read the Alcoholic Relationship Survival Guide which 11Christmases told me about (in the Divorce Book Club discussion) - there's a web link in her post because it's only available there (not on Amazon). That book looked like it had some of the same insights as Sheep, and I'm hoping for more specifics around being in a relationship with a substance abuser.
Good luck to you. May you find peace and a new path to more healthy relationships - you sound like a good person who deserves it.
I'm so sorry you're having to go through this. It is so hard to accept that someone you love so much has been deceiving you all along just to get what he wants. It hurts.
Are you sure you want him to stay in your home with you? You are very kind to consider his situation, but you are setting yourself up for more manipulation and abuse. It will be delaying your healing.
Take extra good care of yourself. YOU deserve the kindness and gentleness right now.
Praying for inner peace - stay strong.
To address what you said about him not having any money to move out on his own. Of course he doesn't. He is an addict. And by letting him stay you are enabling and hurting him as well as hurting yourself. He will have absolutely no incentive to leave. This will go on indefinitely.
The best thing you can do for both of you is to kick him out. Give him a week and if he isn't gone, change the locks & put his stuff someplace where he can access it outside of the house.
Many addicts tend to have other personality disorders. And many addicts are abusive. Living with an addict is often one series of traumas after another for the non-addict. Both men you describe fit the classic description of abuser.
Addiction is an insidious disease. And when someone is addicted, you aren't dealing with them, you're dealing with the drug. Those of us who live with addicts are just as sick as they are, just in a different way So I do encourage you to get help asap. In addition to seeking counseling with someone who is specially trained in recovery from abuse and living w/an addict, please consider going to some 12 step meetings like alanon or narcanon and I especially recommend codependents anonymous (CoDA).
Therapy & group support will help you to learn to set & keep healthy boundaries. Therapy will help you thru the grief process, regain your self esteem and sense of self -worth as well as learning more about setting & keeping healthy boundaries.
Please don't be so hard on yourself. Allow yourself to feel your feelings w/o judgment. They aren't right or wrong, they just are. Also know that you spent well over half your life in extremely toxic environments, so know that it will take a good amount of time to heal. There is no set healing time. So, give yourself the gift of however much time it takes.

New bf and I talked all afternoon and evening tonight, and after a lot of staying strong, confronting him on all his answers I could now tell probably weren't true, he finally admitted that he wasn't in love with me, but he loved me so much, he agreed that we should separate, as soon as he was financially able to, he was sorry it hadn't worked out. But I am such a wonderful person he wants to stay friends, he can't imagine his life without me. I was really secretly heartbroken at his addmission, but acted as though I was fine with it too, like him. We got home from our talk in the car, fixed dinner and we continued to discuss the particulars of how we would unwind our life together. Then, all of a sudden, he was on his phone, back and forth, it lit up like a Xmas tree. He got really uncomfortable, said he was going to take a shower, and 15 min later he brought an overnight bag out to the front door. " babe, this has been a heavy day, I just really need to clear my head". I'm going to my friends house and I will be back home Sunday! See ya later! Love ya! I stood in the kitchen with my jaw on the floor as he walked over to me to kiss me goodbye. I'm so glad I talked with him and pulled off some of the blinders, but oh my god this hurt. I'm so shocked that he now thinks he can just leave like that, is this who he has always been? I ask myself?
I have to get some balls and kick him out, even though he has no where to go and less than a few hundred dollars to his name. I am just so shocked I'm in this situation. I'm realizing I'm a doormat, allow people to manipulate me and take advantage, because I want to be loved so much, and I guess down inside I don't feel I deserve REAL love?? Just babbling in shock right now, so sorry. I realize I'm really not a victim in this, I welcomed it in my door and said " move right in".! Totally didn't listen to my gut 100 times, due to fear I was unfairly comparing him to my 1st partner, and reading too much into an innocent situation. CRAP I'm one of those statistics about a widower moving in a leach. Ugh! I have to really pull myself together and get him out and get help and heal. Thank you all and I appreciate your ears so much. It's true, he is completely over me, if he ever really had any feelings for me. Omg! How does someone fake that! Ugh! Night
