So I asked my husband to withdraw his name from our joint account since he had not been putting in any money into it for years. This is the account that directly pays out all our bills so I didn't want to close and open a new account and switch all the payments. He finally did it and I confirmed with the bank. I just ordered myself the girliest checkbook just in my name.

I remember when I did this. You have a much better outlook than I did. I think I scared the man at the bank. I almost said nothing to him and was on the verge of tears. -- I'm so happy for you taking this first step. You're moving in the right direction :-).

So proud of you Koko! You are taking charge and it must feel good!

Thanks. It does feel good to actually take control of this situation. I didn't even realize how I had been broken down all these years by him emotionally detaching himself from me until now. I felt helpless and angry and upset because he never cared for me yet held it together for the family all these years.

EXACTLY!! I found out that holding it together for the sake of the family was just a dog and pony show (that my kids were not buying) and I'm so glad to no longer participate in it. I kinda enjoy telling people, when they ask "is the house ready", that no, it's not ready, we're divorcing, and if you have any friends who want to move into town, contact me! Court date is in two days and I hope to god that the judge orders stbx to list the house. Hey stbx, look at me! I'm in control, while you wallow in the muck you created!!

Good for you! It's like rediscovering yourself! My stbx often made me buy men's clothes. He said they were cheaper and made better. I hated them. The last time we went to buy me a new winter jacket, he took me into the Columbia store and steered me right over to the men's section. On my way over, I spotted a hot pink parka that I fell in love with. I tried it on and DD told me I looked great. She encouraged me to buy it and even though I was a little nervous, I did. Stbx was NOT happy. It felt so good and I still love how it makes me feel when I'm wearing it!
