I think a letter would be a nice gesture.
(No contact whatsoever with his odd parents, whom I was not close to!)
And, I have renewed contact with his 21-year-old daughter (she initiated contact with me).
Both are e-mail-only connections, and I think that is probably the best way for us at this time.
It's still painful for me to be in touch with the aunt and daughter, because of all the memories and reminders of what I lost, but I'd rather be in touch with them than have them out of my life completely.
I think whatever way feels right to you, his grandmother will be thrilled to hear from you.
I can't think of a reason why you should not get in touch with her.
Worst case scenario: She sends you a nasty gram telling you to leave her alone, in which case, you know exactly where you stand.
