I see this as a preemptive defense for when he inevitably cheats on you. The defense being "But I told you I have never remained faithful to anyone, and yet you chose to stay with me. Why are you so upset that I cheated on you? You can't say you weren't warned; I told you I was a cheater...."

The defense that by staying with him, you tacitly acknowledged the possibility that he might cheat on you and accepted/were ok with that possibility.

As far as cheaters always being cheaters, I don’t think it is true.
I had affairs before, but I have been faithful in every relationship for the past 20 years.
In order for me to straighten up, I went through a major change. Without it, any promises don’t count.
