honestly, i\'m not sure.

in the 1970\'s and 1980\'s, i experienced my share of divorce as a kid and teenager. at the time, my view was that divorce was a good thing, as it replaced anger and pain with a fresh start and new beginnings.

however, now that i\'m a parent, i see things a bit differently...i see how hard it is for parents to not be married and yet still be joined by a child, how hard it can be to stay an active player in your child\'s life when you\'re only seeing them for 20/30/40% of the time. and then i understand why parents stay together \"for the children\".

just some random observations. your thoughts?

It\'s impossible to say it\'s a categorically good or bad thing. Sometimes it is the right thing to have happen and other times it is a weak escape from dealing with the problem. I firmly believe people shouldn\'t get married until they are ready and shouldn\'t get hitched for the wrong reasons. I waited until I was in my 30\'s before I felt ready to make the committment, partly because I was terrified of divorce. Waiting paid off, I have an amazing wife and I\'m all but sure that we won\'t ever get divorced. She\'s my best friend.

People get married too often and get divorced too often. I agree with Josh that waiting until you are making a truly informed choice is key. Marriage is a contract and a serious commitment and should be viewed as such. When children are involved it becomes even more imperative that every effort is made to honor the union. The experience does have lasting effects on the children of divorce and often the effects are seen dramatically when those children become adults end enter unions of their own. Divorce is certainly an option but should be the last one, unless it is an abusive situation. People chose each other for various reasons and many times it is to deal with unresolved issues they have with a parent of conflict. Since decisions of the heart are made, at least in part, unconsciously it can be brought to light through the process of couples therapy. I strongly recommend that before making a decision to divorce a couple should seek the advice of a therapist or counselor who specializes in working with couples.

I agree with you on this fact. I think especially if it could be worked out you should see a therpist or a counsler because divorce is not good.

Good words....and most of the time those who are able to communicate at all work something out.

alas, there are those of us that have spouses that will not communicate. I waited until my children were grown to leave. I too was a child of divorce and I waited until I was 31 to marry. If it wasn\'t for alcohol we\'d still be together even though we don\'t and never really have communicated. I did right much mindreading I tell ya!!

well i have a 14 year old that i adopted, and she has lived her life on the streets, so i drug test her every week. and i get the results fast, it is great.
