Breakups & Divorce Support Group
Just broke up with someone or in the midst of a difficult divorce? Breaking up is difficult no matter what the circumstances are. They say that time heals all wounds, but sometimes a listening ear or a hug can work wonders for the heart. Whether you need a place to vent, someone to hold you to No Contact, or need advice about what to do, we're here to help.
Maybe you can find a place where you can still be there for him but lose that wife mode. Of course it depends on the two of you and your feelings for each other. I know what my stbx's motivation is and why he did what he did. He's not malicious or mean spirited. He's doing the best he can under the circumstances he's in. Nobody here can tell you what you should do. But I can tell you what you shouldn't do. Help him at the expense of your own wellbeing. You still need to put yourself and your needs first.
If he gets his life together and makes amends then you can renew your commitment if you choose.
Your situation sounds a lot like mine except my spouse had a job and was working to finish a degree. I have a terminal degree and made more money than he did. The stuff about the depression and other woman happened to me too. I think in my case that the mental health issues were compounded by midlife crises. That could be true in yours as well. That said, you cannot be a wife to someone who has so clearly rejected you.
I am glad to hear that you no longer allow him to use you and play upon your sympathies by continuing to pay his bills and providing him a place to fall back on.
I have to maintain a certian amount of contact with my stbx because of our child. Aside from that, I do care about him and I think he is on a road to self-destruction. I found myself calling periodically to check in. I also find that he sometimes would call me-- but not to check on me, he wanted to talk over something that his girlfriend would not 'get.' He was very empathetic on the anniversaries of my parents' deaths, otherwise he comes across as pretty cold-hearted. I am trying to limit my contact to child-related issues- and only urgent ones at that. If I did not have a child, I would 'cut the cord'. The bottom line is that you have to do what works for you. New2this2 said that she and her ex check in with each other- sounds like there is reciprocity there. In my case not so much. How about yours?
Regarding the depression, anxiety, binge-drinking- you cannot help him unless he recognizes that he has a problem and seeks help. Anything less sets you up for co-dependency and could enable him behavior.
