i was cheated on by my husband of 18 years with a woman that he knew I hated. We have been going to therapy and he says he is so sorry he would never do it again cuz he realized what he had. I just don't know if I can get over it it's been 3 years and it hasn't gotten any easier has anyone ever heard of or know of a couple that has survived infedilty in their marraige

I did. My ex-husband first cheated on me almost 2o years ago, 18 years before our divorce. 18 years was the second round with infidelity and this time he just walked out instead of fighting for the marriage. (don't know if I would've fought). The issue is that we never talked or resolved the first infidelity issue. We just "forgot". Never addressed the why and the underlying cause. Yes - I do believe a marriage can survive infidelity, but it must have a commitment from both parties to work through why it happened and what to do so that it doesn't happen again.

I know how you are feeling in the sense of is this worth saving and how will you be able to trust him and move on. There is no answer that is the right answer there is just you have to go with your heart and if you feel as if you are just pushing the pause button for what may come anyways and that is divorce. I can tell you that it is not easy and no one likes to feel like they have been replaced in a snap Is he sorry for what he has done or is he sorry that you found out and he had to end it ? He may very well be sorry but is it for the right reason . This is your life too and he is not the one to decide to keep your life in limbo and you walk on egg shells. Therapy can help but both parties have to want it and not just need it . If my best friend came to me and said my spouse or boy friend had an affair but ended it and wants to work things out. I would tell her great try therapy for the both of you but you also need therapy because every time he is late or leaves early or hides his phone you will wonder . Is that what you want in your life ? Trust is earned and not given just because he says he is sorry. You are the one with the doubt, the pain and the what if. Go with your heart and your gut feeling but there will be regret no matter what, regret working it out, regret not working it out. Can you say to yourself you trust he will not do it again ? Be smart , be strong and above all be yourself.

My wife cheated on me and ended up leaving. I can tell you I would have forgiven her to keep the marriage not just for me but also the kids. I know I would not have forgotten but I would have forgiven. If the roles were reversed and I had cheated and wanted forgiveness I would have no problem doing what was requested - i.e. looking at cell phone and records....in order to build up trust.
