Breakups & Divorce Support Group
Just broke up with someone or in the midst of a difficult divorce? Breaking up is difficult no matter what the circumstances are. They say that time heals all wounds, but sometimes a listening ear or a hug can work wonders for the heart. Whether you need a place to vent, someone to hold you to No Contact, or need advice about what to do, we're here to help.
Nick obviously understands that this is a problem with his trust issues and something caused by his old past relationships, not with you. And in his heart, he knows that he has strong feelings for you now; yet he is afraid to open up to commitment, and this causes him to make up false ideas about what happened in Berlin. Perhaps his "ego" is at play too. I imagine that this is Nick's way of controlling you as well; pushing you away so that he will not have to commit to you; I also feel that he doesn't really know how to properly handle his trust issues at present. Because he has too many flashback episodes of failed relationships, he targets you for blame, because he never resolved his disappointment in a healthy way. And without him really understanding how this is hurting you so much, he will only hide behind his true feelings for you while pushing you away in order to protect his feelings, which is why he pretends to believe in lies. I do feel that he really believes that you are telling the honest truth, yet it is easier to cope with you leaving him and not with him leaving you; he doesn't have the guts to leave you now. But still, his on-again, off-again behavior is way too far off balance and this has to come to a stop before you can make a happy relationship with him. Nick is just putting up a fight because he is afraid to love you and afraid of being hurt, so he is really hiding from you by making you feel guilty and ashamed; for nothing too; he is trying to battle off his true feelings for you.
Now, you know that some relationships take a great deal of work to make happy things happen in your favor. And what good is it going to do for you to harm yourself? Why not place all your useful energy into planning a useful way to stay patient while helping Nick get over his trust issues? And with getting over this problem his ego may calm down as well. I'd recommend just dating and not pressing him to a commitment until he is ready to be with you in a relationship. And it may take a long while or possibly a short while before Nick can really trust you. However, you are just going to have to help him learn how to trust. Ask him what it is that he wants in you. Further ask him if he will give you a chance to show him how responsible and mature-minded you are as just a true friend; do this until HE is ready for change. And you will know for sure when he is ready. Just be still, wait and keep yourself healthy. I understand that this is a very emotional time for each of you. But he is admitting that he has a problem and if you really want to be with him, and in love with him, then you have to show him that you care enough to help him get over this problem. And you can do this. Trust yourself.
Best to you, <3
