its the greatest thing to ever happen to me..

I'm going to be taking this advice in too because I am in the same "boat" ;)

I'll be watching this post because I too feel on the outside in social situations. I am not good at small talk and find it annoying. So. let's see what the good people of DS have to say.

Check MeetUp.com. I may take advantage of that in the future.

All the stuff that came up for me was for the DC area....that is 1.5 hours from me. Heck...Culpeper is that far away. I have a lot of friends there.

guess thats true since i live in st louis (city) it probably is more accesible to more ppl

and bernie, i'm great at small talk and dont have any problems mixing with total strangers..prob gonna get me in trouble some day, but right now its pretty handy

are there any colleges where you live? our local community college has adult classes every year...anything ranging from birdwatching to photography. Most classes are affordable and a great way to meet new people. Some of them even offer day trips to different places to get to meet new people. I'm not sure if the chamber of commerce would have listings of local clubs or activies groups...worth a shot to look up.

I am afraid of the bars in this town.....It seems like a different kind of crowd than I am use to. WHo knows. Darn...I am looking forward to seeing the reaction people give me when I tell them I live on a boat!!

i was also lucky..when i lived on the other side of st louis and stbx left, i just had rach go up with me pretty early after it happened and its a little corner joint, but they took me under their arms...now i walk in there (kinda a cheers kinda place) and either no one mentions i was married or the whole bar bashes the x..either way works for me, cept no one hits on me cause they are all to busy protecting me..dam!

theres this one fellow lefty who when i walk in says *so you heard from the mother **&^$&)_+)*^$$* and have ya taken him to the cleaners yet..

My problem is...I live in a HUGE HUGE HUGE college town. Actually, there are 2 universities in th earea. I'm 30 and everyone else (it seems, but I know there are more my age there somewhere) is 19 lol. That, and there are a lot of "well to do" folks in this town too. Hard to explain it.

Ha! I'm in the same boat, live in a small conservative community, and have my kids almost full time, so for me to offer advice would be the blind leading the blind. But I can offer you an *I'm with you* and second the meetup recommendation.

I am the one who was always so social, I could strike up a conversation with anyone. My stbx is so overbearing and parinoid that I could not talk to anyone - so I got out of that habit quick, not I dont feel like I have anything to offer -
So I am totally unable to offer any advice on where to go to meet people from exp but is there a bar around the marina or something? Maybe that would have mote of the right crowd.
I have to watch this post and see what ideas get tossed out there

Well, I'm about to face that situation if I relocate.

I have high hopes of taking classes at the local adult ed place. Even if I don't socialize with anyone outside of the class, at least it will keep me busy and get me out of the house. Hope I can afford to do it.

There is always volunteer work if you have time--thought I might try that too. Uh-oh, feeling anxiety! We'll have to keep brainstorming.
