On New Years Eve my wife went to work in the morning. She was to be done at 2:00. By 2:20 my daughter and I were worried so my daughter called her. My wife was very vague but said she was on her way. She only worked 5 minutes from home. Another 20 minutes went by and my daughter was in a panic (I'll explain why a little later) so she called her again. This time they were yelling at each other and my daughter hung up.
I called my wife back and she told me she was never coming home again. This took my completely by surprise. Why did she make that statement?
For the next 48 hours my wife would not respond to anyone. Me, out daughter, family friends, no one. We had the police involved, we kept calling hospitals. Finally we were able to hack into her cell phone account and track her phone. He dad and sister went to the location and found her with another man. To say the least I was devastated.
She finally called our daughter and told her she was not coming home. I was lost. Why did this happen?
Time for a little background. We have been married for just over 20 years and we have an 18 year old daughter.
For the most part I'd say the marriage was between good and great with some exceptions but my wife told me a couple weeks after she left that it was all my fault. That I was always mean to her and didn't love her.
Mean she says. Well the only time I was mean as she put it was when she provoked it. There was never any violence and I would never hit her, or any woman for that matter, but I would yell and get angry. So what mad me angry? Lets start at the beginning:
A few months after we started dating I added her to my checking account. Things were great and saw no reason not to. Then the problems started. Money kept coming up missing with no receipts. This caused checks to bounce. I would ask where it went, the answer was always "I'm sorry, I forgot to tell you".
This went on for a couple years until I had enough and closed the account opening one in my name only to pay the bills and simply leaving her a cash allowance. By this time we were married.
Since the access to the account was gone I thought things would stop. Boy was I wrong! She opened her own checking account. She was working so I thought okay. Not okay. She bounced 19 checks the first month! One of which she wrote to me which caused me to bounce 4 checks myself. FYI - I borrowed money to cover all checks and fee's. Needless to say the bank closed the account and she couldn't get another one.
Did that stop her? Nope! Next was items missing from the home. My items! Jewellery, CD's, etc... Anything she could pawn. Including her engagement ring and our wedding rings!. All of which she claimed got lost. By the way, I bought her 3 engagement rings and 2 wedding rings as she claimed they got lost a second time.
After she ran out of things to sell she started taking out credit cards. She would max them out, all with cash advances, and never make a single payment. This went on for years and at least a dozen credit cards. All of which I paid!
Most of you are probably thinking, why did I stay with her? So was I at the time. Simple answer - I loved her. Her mom had spending issues as well so I thought this is how she was raised. While it amounted to thousands of dollars I didn't care. I loved her.
After all that I thought things were getting better. Boy was I wrong! Now the drinking started. She would get drunk almost everyday and lie about it. She would hide bottles of vodka all over the place. Our daughters room, the bathroom, down the back of her pants. It was bad. She forgot to pick our kid up on several occasions. Would show up drunk at school functions and family events. Became a complete embarrassment. My daughter had come home from school several times to find her passed out. And if all that isn't bad enough she wrecked her car twice because she was drunk. Thankfully only single car accidents she was able to drive away from but wrecks none the less.
All this because she said I was mean and didn't love her or didn't give her enough money. Mean! damn right at times I was mean, who wouldn't be? Especially when she started stealing money or items of value from our family and friends houses. How many times people came to my house (including her own mother) stating money was missing after my wife left. Every time I covered it or sided with my wife because she said she didn't do it. Hell, she even wrote my grandparents bogus checks to get money from them. Claiming our daughter was sick and that I refused to leave money for medicine. All complete BS.
And you want to know the worst part. I still love her and I always will. Our daughter tells me I'm better off without her. Hell she has gone as far as tell me that if mom moves back in I am moving out. How can one chose between the woman he loves and the daughter he loves.
My wife told her sister she needed to disconnect. Disconnect? That's funny. She left me for a disabled drunk and is now currently living in an apartment above a liqueur store. He has no money and gets less than a third of what I bring home. She is always telling our daughter how she has no money to do anything. Good for you. I have plenty and am now using it to fix up my house.
I don't know what the future has in store for me. I can tell you that I hope its a far cry better than the past. What I find the most odd is that I suffered years of child abuse growing up with a drunk as a father and another drunk as a step father and that didn't even come close to the pain I felt and have felt since the day she left me. I even had a prior girlfriend of 4 years I was going to propose to leave me for another man. I swear there is something really wrong with me. I have been treated like dirt all my life but still keep moving forward.
Oh well, rant is complete. Thanks for reading.
By the way - divorce will be finalized by mid May if all goes well and in her greed she signed it all away for a measly 2k. Settlement agreement has already been signed and filed with the court.

If having a lying, thieving, manipulating, embezzling, drinking spouse is the definition of a "good and great" marriage, I wonder what a no-so-good marriage would look like...
To the other comment. It does seem like a lot but the good times were really good and there were a lot of them. Even just before she left. That is why I chose the overlook the bad. I kept thinking as she got older it would stop. Silly on my part I know but as I said I really loved her.
I'm also a firm believer in giving people a chance to change and grow. Maybe stupid on my part considering the dozens of chances given but I hate to give up on people.
You were with her for 20 years. You enabled her for 20 years. Why should she "grow out of it" and change? Her behavior went from bad to worse and still no consequences.
My next comments are based on my personal experience...
When you really love someone, you don't stand by and watch them destroy their lives, endanger others and ruin relationships. You do whatever is necessary to get them to a healthier place.
My first marriage ended in divorce due to my untreated alcoholism. Never once did he "force" me into rehab, AA or counseling in order to help me get health. In retrospect, I realized he didn't love me enough. His "love" for me and our relationship wasn't worth his time and effort to help me get better.
Would you have allowed your wife to refuse treatment for a terminal illness because she didn't think she had a problem? Her issues are just as terminal as any cancer.
