Brain Injury Support Group
Traumatic brain injury occurs when a sudden trauma causes brain damage. TBI can result from a closed head injury or a penetrating head injury. Symptoms of a TBI can be mild, moderate, or severe, depending on the extent of the damage to the brain. Outcome can be anything from complete recovery to permanent disability or death. A coma can also affect a child's brain.
I'm sleeping will now, 8 hours a night. I have a night routine that helps , but I also think time healed whatever was wrong. It's really hard to say. This sounds stupid, but have you tried a bit of wine? And I do mean a Bit. My neuro suggested it, but it didn't work for me. It might do something for you.
A note about melatonin. My pharmacist said it was not for sleep, but rather for getting people on a schedule of sleep. She said I would need it when traveling to Hawaii , due to time changes. She also said that's what pilots use to combat all the time changes. It was emphasized that it would not "put you to sleep".
I agree with Ted about the earplugs. If you can find Mack's earplugs, they're the best ( IMO) . I"ve used them for over 30 years and used to say "I could sleep through a bomb" with them. In bed I use them in one ear; the side I don't sleep on and so I hear my husband's breathing! I used to need them if Mark was in one room with the radio on ( not loudly ) and I was trying to read in the next room. I don't need that anymore; I think my brain has gotten better at filtering out some distractions.
I hope you can find something that works for you. At one point my neuro suggested a small drink of wine. It didn't work for me, but might help you. Don't drink it if you're on sleep meds though. Remember, any new med takes 3 weeks to get into your system, so don't give up too easily on a new one. Take a nap any time you can, and even just resting may help you feel better. One other note: have you had your thyroid checked? If you have hyPER thyroid, that can keep you awake. Just a thought.... Hugs, Holly
