Brain Injury Support Group
Traumatic brain injury occurs when a sudden trauma causes brain damage. TBI can result from a closed head injury or a penetrating head injury. Symptoms of a TBI can be mild, moderate, or severe, depending on the extent of the damage to the brain. Outcome can be anything from complete recovery to permanent disability or death. A coma can also affect a child's brain.
I have Post Concussive Syndrome. When I went to a "Neuro", they did a "dye CAT scan", which showed no damage.
But, he explained to me that in an accident, even without blacking out, or any observable
problems shown by a CAT scan ...
When you are hit, two things happen. Your brain is fed by tiny capillaries. They get broken off, and the blood supply to any part of the brain is affected.
And, so far as I'm concerned, he also told me that the connections between the neurons, (which transmit all the signals in the brain)
are also broken, or shifted. So that they work fine sometimes, or, not at all, and any sort of symptoms can crop up at any time after the accident.
From my experience:
Sometimes I can't taste anything.
Sometimes lights are too bright .. as when I walk into a supermarket, and have to put my sunglasses on.
Sometimes, and this is getting better, I think, I would/could not recall names for very ordinary things. So, I had to say "Will you please pass me the thing which holds the salt?" The name "salt shaker" was just not available.
Sometimes, though the temperature remains the same, I feel really cold .. or, really hot.
Last of all, this is one which is totally constant. I have the feeling that I really have to "P", right away, or I will have "U" running down my leg.
**BUT**, when I reach the bathroom, I always need to take a "C", instead. But it "feels" as if I don't get there immediately, I will wet my pants..
Weird, huh? But the connections got crossed, so that's what I feel.
My point is, a concussion, brain injury of any kind, will have some results ... which are totally unpredictable.
Hope that this helps. I'd hate to have that symptom, but I have palsy, from diabetes.
"Ain't life grand?" I'm 78 years old ... and I keep wondering when the "Golden Years" will finally kick in. (yeah, LOL, |:-((> (a Marine smiley, with a goatee! That will be the day!
God bless you!
