Traumatic brain injury occurs when a sudden trauma causes brain damage. TBI can result from a closed head injury or a penetrating head injury. Symptoms of a TBI can be mild, moderate, or severe, depending on the extent of the damage to the brain. Outcome can be anything from complete recovery to permanent disability or death. A coma can also affect a child's brain.
This post is for anyone who wants to give some encouragement and support to Rae.
She is going to court on Monday, June 4th. The drunk driver who injured her is FINALLY going to be held accountable for his actions. She has prepared a Victims Impact statement on what his reckless behavior did to her.

I'm totally in your corner. What you are doing has tremendous personal meaning for me, since I too was injured by a drunk driver. I am so very glad you are getting this moment. You fought hard to get heard and this is YOUR time! This court hearing is not about him. It is about you - having YOUR MOMENT of justice!
May your words ring out in that courtroom. May the truth of those words impact everyone who hears them.

Monday is a day that I have been waiting for three years...it was May 5th, 2009 that he was a no show for his original court date. He has so far plead not guilty waiting for the prosecution to bargain down to a lessor charge...thankfully they have not. If at the trial Monday he continues this not guilty plea then it goes from the judge to a full jury trial...(boy this all gets so drug out)..if he pleas guilty Monday then they set the sentancing hearing date which will be 6-8 weeks out.
I simply want to see him finally be held accountable for his actions. Furthermore I will have my say...he may not pay any attention, but I will speak my peace about that night and tell all how he changed my life that fateful evening. Hopefully my statement will sway the judge to lean towards a heavier sentance...this dirtball deserves it!
All I can say about that is WOW! It feels good to have this sort of validation..an entire organization of this stature is standing behind me! Sharon told me that she disagrees with how the prosecutor has handled the case and that this drunk should be getting a heavier charge. M.A.D.D is going to help me do everything possible to get this drunk dirtball off the roads and to make him pay for the destruction he has already caused!
Last night one of the original founders of M.A.D.D. contacted me. She is going to help me press for the maximum penalty and also I plan to file a complaint against the prosecution for not adding my injuries as an additional charge. They only charged him with the injuries to his passenger, believe it or not! I hope to make this as public as possible and I promise that I will have my say and my say will be very loud!!!
I appreciate all of the support that you have all given me. You have all been amazing! A special shout out to Elainie for helping to write my Victims Impact Statement. MADD said that it is fantastic!
