Traumatic brain injury occurs when a sudden trauma causes brain damage. TBI can result from a closed head injury or a penetrating head injury. Symptoms of a TBI can be mild, moderate, or severe, depending on the extent of the damage to the brain. Outcome can be anything from complete recovery to permanent disability or death. A coma can also affect a child's brain.
what doctors or tests have you found to be helpful in claiming disability inusurance?. my partner is 2 yrs out from most reccent concussions, but PCS symptoms persist, and he can only focus for an hour - but Ins. Co says "you can ride a bike you are well enough to work" - i'm paraphrasing but i'm sure you get it. we've had all the tests, had all his Dr.'s write letters, etc. filled in all their forms, but declined. he can't function after 15mins in a grocery store, but presents well at Dr's apptmnts. etc. what kind of apptitude tests are there, that can show - you can't function at work? help please!
I was granted disability following brain surgery. I feel part of the ease in getting it was due to the fact that one of the main papers wrote a full page article about my surgery. I included that in my application.
However, a couple of years later I was re-evaluated by a government neuropsy. I could tell her the name of the president, and as you mentioned "presented well" . She felt I could work, so I went to my neuropsyc and had her do another round of tests. She ended up writing to whoever , saying how frustrated I became after an hour of work, my irritability at doing certain tasks, etc. It all boiled down to , and she wrote in her report, that I didn't belong in a work situation. ( I do volunteer teaching now, but it's at my schedule) .
I agree that a lawyer might be necessary. I was on another tbi chat, and the majority of the people had to get a lawyer because disability was so hard to prove. Good luck as you and your partner navigate this road. - Holly
