Traumatic brain injury occurs when a sudden trauma causes brain damage. TBI can result from a closed head injury or a penetrating head injury. Symptoms of a TBI can be mild, moderate, or severe, depending on the extent of the damage to the brain. Outcome can be anything from complete recovery to permanent disability or death. A coma can also affect a child's brain.
Hi everyone-well, it's been 2 1/2 years since my fall, and really nothing has gotten better. I'm seeing a new neuro. since my old one, who I really liked didn't accept medicaid. Anyway, the new doc. ordered neuropsych. testing, which I finished up last week. So at my next appointment, he said he should have some idea of a plan to see if anything can be helped. I wish my old neuro had done the testing 2 years ago when I first saw her, but looking back does no good.
Anyway, my question is about walking. I have ocular vertigo, caused by messed up connections between my eyes and my brain. Anytime I see a group of objects moving, such as cars, the leaves on a tree blowing, or a train passing in front of me, I have to close my eyes, or else I'll become very dizzy and nauseous.
I always enjoyed walking with my dog, but have hardly done it since I got hurt. So I'm trying to figure out a way to walk, but have something I could use in case I got dizzy. A walker is out, because I would be limited as to how fast I could go (though I wouldn't go fast at all in the beginning-I guess I'm hoping I'll be able to get back to the point I was before I fell-walking fast enough to make it good exercise. I was thinking about a cane, but don't know if that would help me to keep my balance. I was even thinking of getting my dog Maia-she's a lab mix-the type of harness used with balance dogs. I'm teaching her to pick up stuff on the floor that I drop, and things like that-I'd like her to be my service dog and help with things that might make me dizzy. Has anyone used a service dog to help with their balance? I'm seriously considering working with her on this.
Does anyone have any other ideas that will help me walk safely? Besides getting dizzy, sometimes even though I feel like I am walking straight, I veer off to the left-it's kind of weird. Any way, thanks for any ideas-I've been sitting around my house because of my problems, but getting out and walking, even if it is just a little bit, will help me (and the dog) feel much better. I use to live with daily nausea. But, that is now gone with time and the use of the special glasses. Times heals I believe many things tho not all. They also helped me with some of the depth perception issue. But, I still have a great deal of difficulty with that, even with the use of the glasses. I think maybe that damage to my eyes is permenant.

How about a cane that has four legs. I seen them made out of aluminum. It would be light enough to move with and strong to support you. Check a medical supply store or a pharmacy.
Saw your other post and congrats that you're getting disability. That must be a relief on the financial end.
On the vertigo,I basically 2nd what SweetSeaEyes said. You really need to see a brain-vision specialist, if you haven't already done so.
I went through about 7 months of vision therapy. After my TBI I couldn't read correctly because the words & numbers were scrambled. I suspect they may have other things they can do to help your particular medical problem.
I hope things start to get better for you, in terms of getting more medical help.
