Traumatic brain injury occurs when a sudden trauma causes brain damage. TBI can result from a closed head injury or a penetrating head injury. Symptoms of a TBI can be mild, moderate, or severe, depending on the extent of the damage to the brain. Outcome can be anything from complete recovery to permanent disability or death. A coma can also affect a child's brain.

Florida "trip"

Well, I'm in Florida. I've been here for almost 2 months. Needless to say, it has been a trip. At the end of July, I was involuntarily hospitalized. Still don't know what my diagnosis is, but once they gave me a mood stabilizer, I began to relax. I'm still on Zoloft too, but I think the Depakote is working better. I've been taking my meds regularly, but I feel like everyone is questioning me and my meds.

Zoloft and Prozac were the first 2 anti depressants I tried after my injury. I couldn't put up with the side effects I experienced from either of them at the time. As for people questioning both you and your meds, since everybody responds differently to these things, it's a real guessing game with plenty of questions to be answered.

Hi Alyssa, I'm sorry things have been rough for you, but you had a traumatic experience happen, a TBI, paralysis, and it hasn't even been a year yet. I was wondering if you have a therapist/someone with trauma/BI experience that you could talk to? Maybe the Brain Injury Assoc. in your state would have some names. A specialist that could help sort out what is happening right now. In reading here, people have spoken of how they feel different after TBI, mood swings, anger, depression, confusion, fatigue, etc...sometimes meds can help/sometimes not/healing takes time, and its hard for us, for family,friends to accept and very hard to understand as well.

You always have a place here to be understood, but please don't let anyone put a *label* on you....this journey is so hard and often misunderstood, which is why my hope for you and anyone else in your position, is to get the best TBI Specialist you can find, experienced, and help talking out some of the emotions that go along with trauma and so much change, a good therapist is worth their weight in gold, IMHO!! How are you doing now? Are your meds helping?

I think I'd like to be in Florida this winter... I'm dreading the snow because my doctors put constraints on my "fun". It's slippery outside so they don't even want me to take walks, let alone snow shoe, cross country ski etc.
