Brain Injury Support Group
Traumatic brain injury occurs when a sudden trauma causes brain damage. TBI can result from a closed head injury or a penetrating head injury. Symptoms of a TBI can be mild, moderate, or severe, depending on the extent of the damage to the brain. Outcome can be anything from complete recovery to permanent disability or death. A coma can also affect a child's brain.
Do you hate that you look normal and everyone thinks that you are okay when you are really not? People look at me and think that my life is so easy because I have lived with my injury for so long. They can't see my scars. my hair has grown back thicker on that side.
My father especially used to get pissed because I made it look easy. And yes he told me that point blank. When he became diabetic and lost one of his legs he spent a lot of time feeling sorry for himself and hating me for my recovery. But that is another group all together.
If I have a good nights sleep and don't over do it, I can lead a pretty normal life and most people never know that anything is wrong with me. And then when I do get tired and I start to miss things or forget things and drag my left side people look at me like I am stupid or putting on an act to get out of doing something.

I was ten. No one talked to me about it. No one talked to me about the seizures I had in the hospital. The healed my broken leg, my broken pelvis, and discharged me from the hospital. Period.
I have a friend, not on DS, who has a brain tumor...she went to lunch with a friend, and when they were ready to leave, she couldn't get up from her seat...her legs/muscles were weak..,she had to push herself up with borh hands on the table, just to stand. Someone sitting nearby loudly said" I see you had too much alcohol at lunch"....usually my friend is pretty calm, but the brain tumor has been very hard to deal with..just going to lunch was a rare treat for her. She turned to the snarky person who made the remark and said...."No I don't drink...I'm trying to survive a Brain Tumor".....the guy shut up real fast!!
I wouldn't wish a BI on anyone....I just wish there wasn't so much ignorance, even among doctors. If you find a good doc with experience and insurance covers it, it's a big deal. Among the population of homeless people, I saw recent stats, that claim a large percentage have TBI/ABI...which makes me very sad. I stay to myself and do my own thing. My favorite line..."You can't judge another 'till you walk in their shoes" Peace! and Hugs!
