Traumatic brain injury occurs when a sudden trauma causes brain damage. TBI can result from a closed head injury or a penetrating head injury. Symptoms of a TBI can be mild, moderate, or severe, depending on the extent of the damage to the brain. Outcome can be anything from complete recovery to permanent disability or death. A coma can also affect a child's brain.
Hello, does anyone know how long you can feel the effects of a moderate concussion? I ran head first into the metal pole (there is a long story behind this) almost 2 years ago. I still struggle with word recall sometimes, and brutal headaches on occasion but what freaked me out last week was while I was at work typing up phone number I completely forgot what a five looked like. I couldn't find it anywhere on the keyboard and it took several seconds before muscle memory kicked in and found the 5 but it took a while longer after that to remember what the 5 looked like. Should I be concerned?
I'd definitely get the headaches looked into. Do you have a neurologist? Were you diagnosed with a concussion initially? Concussions are considered a brain injury , at least by my neuro, and you could have some cognitive problems after it. I have had 3 head injuries. I had mild cognitive problems after the first 2, but then when I had the concussion ( #3) , my neuropsyc scores fell, and my neuropsyc called the concussion "the icing on the cake". I have trouble with word retrieval ; trying to find the word I want. I finally had to sit with a thesaurus and learn alternate words ( synonyms) for certain words. It's not unusual for me not to be able to think of the names of my children, and say to my husband ( or anyone) "you know, the blonde one" or " the tall one". One of my favorite examples of not being able to think of a word is when I was trying to tell my husband about backing out of the driveway. I just couldn't think of "backing out' , so I said "unpark".
You may want to get neuropsychological testing done to see if parts of your brain have been hurt by the concussion. I think to do this, you need a referral at Least by your GP. If you have a neurologist , he can refer you. I have the testing done every 4 yrs , and I'm seeing myself go downhill. However it's good to know what my strengths and weaknesses are. If you do get them done, be sure to get a copy of them and the results .
In my humble opinion, I think you are having long term effects of the concussion. There is a thing called Post Concussive Syndrome where you feel the effects of the concussion for a long time ( in my case, the rest of my life ). You might want to seek out help from a neurologist and neuropsychologist (for testing ). Let us know how things go. - Holly
