Brain Injury Support Group
Traumatic brain injury occurs when a sudden trauma causes brain damage. TBI can result from a closed head injury or a penetrating head injury. Symptoms of a TBI can be mild, moderate, or severe, depending on the extent of the damage to the brain. Outcome can be anything from complete recovery to permanent disability or death. A coma can also affect a child's brain.

I suffered a TBI by running straight on into a door frame, 8 stitches and with no CT I was sent home. Everything would be "fine" and I would be myself in a few days. I tell you, if I see those doctors again I want to give them a good talking to...but that\'s another story. Anyway, I wasn\'t myself. The next day I slept and slept. Following that one day break I returned to school and my attitude and mood were completely different. I was overconfident and bordering on cocky. I lacked motivation to do anything. My memory was shot and I couldn\'t do anything except think about sleeping. Few days after that I was clearly a new person. As days turned into weeks turned into months. My once exceptional grades down turned into barely passing marks. By my 3rd class I was "gone" too tired to do anything. The summer came and I did nothing. I don\'t even really remember it. School came again and the mild depression that was starting to kick in earlier nose dived into a severe episode. I was constantly being kicked out of class, the counselors had no idea what to do. I was getting dizzy and had headaches, the nurses had no idea what to do. In a rage I wrote a story about my school being blown up and that was found and resulted in a host of new problems. I was then being forced to go to the ER for constant suicidal ideation. My mother had no idea what to do! Everyone kept saying that it was hormones or "those teenage years". My mother knew better, to make a long story short, we finally got referred to a neurolgist and my diagnosis was made. It took a relatively short time compared to most to find my diagnosis, only a one and a half years. But to the make the point - simple things can have major consequences, so if you think somethings wrong, don\'t silence yourself. Keep looking for those answers. Don\'t give up!
