Traumatic brain injury occurs when a sudden trauma causes brain damage. TBI can result from a closed head injury or a penetrating head injury. Symptoms of a TBI can be mild, moderate, or severe, depending on the extent of the damage to the brain. Outcome can be anything from complete recovery to permanent disability or death. A coma can also affect a child's brain.
i understand, and have much sympathy for those of you with TBI and an accident, coma, trauma, scar, black dot on X-Ray, and all of your difficulties. but i'd like to hear from anyone who suffered a mTBI and didn't know about it until too late. Maybe an accident many years ago? Maybe you didn't remember? Maybe a cumulative effect from many concussions? and now there's a final straw, and you've been forced to figure out what was the root cause of all your symptoms? Maybe you did something? Had another seemingly minor injury? blacked out? started having other symptoms that didn't match?
my partner had an accident 30 years ago, way before i met him. he said he had many issues from it, including Epilepsy, which he had various scans that showed, and many drugs that sometimes helped and then didn't. i'd never seen him have what i knew to be an Epileptic seizure. He always knew if he was hit in the front of his head, it triggered weird episodes, mainly incredible mood swings. we had one such episode in the middle of Sydney Aus. NOT COOL! a few years into our relationship, he started acting "manic" and had bouts of energy and sudden instability.That was diagnosed as Bi-Polar - more meds. Then Anxiety - everyday faced with a work where he was feeling persecuted, and anxious, he would get physically sick, on his way there, and was always in fear for losing his job. More Meds.
Then suddenly he suffered 3 more hits. MInor, but not to his already damaged lobes. Then something REALLY bad happened, out of character, and against all odds, and no explanation. But absolutely NOT what everyone else thought of. We Knew the back story, and we knew that it wasn't possible. TESTS have proven in his favour.
We were forced to start a HUGE investigative process to find out what went so wrong, Nothing showed up on tests. Neuro Psych. gave us a positive diagnosis of Brain Injury, Depression, and Anxiety/Stress related disorders. He suffers text book from everything i've read about PCS. But no one here will diagnose as such, because no accident, no X-Ray, no coma, no tumour.
Has anyone else slowly figured out they have TBI?
I read "In search of my husbands mind" and it took them years to diagnose her husband with TBI from an OD of Morphine during surgery. Its such a helpless feeling, please share, and maybe we can help each other? many thanks for listening. Red

I have spent the last 50 years or so with a number of psychological 'conditions' that neither meds nor psychotherapy could ever alleviate. Maintaining jobs or relationships proved impossible. I had sensitivity, focus, self esteem, speech and fatigue issues my entire life.....but no idea why.
I knew the accident had happened, but nobody (including every doctor/psychiatrist/psychologist i ever saw) had 'joined the dots' until i met a girl (on a dating site) that had a bad car accident 16 years prior and was living with significant psychological impairments. As we got to know eachother and discussed 'issues', the similarities became readily apparent.
At first, i found the 'news' very freeing. It brought peace to a 'battle' that i had fought my entire life. The nagging question of "WHY" was finally answered.
Then my 'reality' set in. The only thing that kept me going was the 'hope' that one day i might get past the issues. That hope is now gone and it seems that the effects of 'ptsd' will wait until you are ready to deal with them......then beats the living crap out you.
