Brain Injury Support Group
Traumatic brain injury occurs when a sudden trauma causes brain damage. TBI can result from a closed head injury or a penetrating head injury. Symptoms of a TBI can be mild, moderate, or severe, depending on the extent of the damage to the brain. Outcome can be anything from complete recovery to permanent disability or death. A coma can also affect a child's brain.
I had to break it down into parts. Parts of my anger were directed...here...some there....and some over here. The biggest part was...I'm the one who's messed up so bad and everyone else gets off free of charge.
Once I was able to break it into parts I evaluated one piece at a time. Found a way to deal with it, accept it as a real emotion not just rage (and that's what I felt). The healing began.
It took a long time...it did not happen over night. I've gone through the crying for no reason too....it's the part of our brains that were injured. When I first came home...I couldn't cry. The only emotion was anger that showed or that I felt.
This injury is not rational by any means. I've done and said things I'd have tripped over before my accident. You are not alone!
Time will heal a great deal of it. Until then...don't push yourself so hard.
I'm not so bad now. Yeah I can snap at times and be a bit quick to answer back but I'm definitely not as bad as I was in the first year or two. As is said in your other answer time is a great healer.
You learn to take five and that five is often long enough for you to realise its not that big a deal. It is allot to deal with and no wonder you are mad and losing your temper.
I still get annoyed at times but am much better at holing it in now. It has taken a while though. don't expect to just turn it off one day it does take some work but you can do it and you'll get there too
I didn't feel any anger until about the 1 year mark. I don't think I was physically capable of feeling anger until that point, because anger takes energy.
And, then...wow...bouts of anger then...and recently very severe anger.
Let's see:
-anger at the drunk driver
-anger at the person who I was talking to who kept me late so I was on the road at that particular time
-anger at the DAs office for giving the drunk driver a slap on the wrist
-anger at people for not helping me
Etc.
What you are feeling is VERY, VERY normal.
I knew anger, very well. But since my TBI, all of my emotions are amplified.
I am a man, yet I cry more than men should. I am becomming okay with it. This is a part of our new lives......
I find ways to go with my feelings. Our mind is a wonderful gift. We are Very powerful. I try to fight my ANT'S (Automatic Negative Thoughts) Don't let these thoughts ruin your life. "Talk back to them, in your mind..." If your "ANT" says you're angry, ask why? Think it through, and tell yourself the opposite. It helps, maybe you will find yourself mistaken and end up happy.
Find ways to be happy. You said it was not her fault? So try not to blame her.... She is a friend. Friends are hard to find, believe me, I don't have many. AND I know this IS my fault. I can be too sensitive, so i'm a downer. I make an issue out of little things, sometimes. It is really hard to change ourself, but we have to.
Every day is a trial and error day for me, and i've made too many errors.
I wish you the best of luck. I know you will make it.
