Hi. I, unfortunately, know exactly what you are going through. I had multiple concussions when I was younger, playing sports. They never seemed major. I always recovered. Later in life, I was very physically active, had a great job, had just got married a little over a year before to the same great woman I had been dating for 15 years. We waited until we both finished college and had good jobs. My wife was expecting our first child. Then, out of nowhere, I was involved in a horrible accident. On top of some other injuries, I received a level 3 concussion. I had a mind shattering migraine, non stop for 3 months. The migraines, after 10 years, now ruin about half my days. I live for the good days I can be a father to my kids and a husband to my wife. I deal with the other days. Get a good neurologist! Try everything they suggest to get the most control over your pain. Unfortunately I can relate to your story and ours sound similar. I fell on ice hitting the back of my head on 1/22/18. I’ve been to numerous doctors, specialists after having vertigo, feeling of unbalance,headache/migraines, I have terrible brain fog,word find issues, fatigue, insomnia, and I’m not working. At this point I don’t see how I can go back to work with the brain fog. I did have a test this week, not sure what it’s called and the audiologist was able to put “the crystals” back in place so my vertigo is better but I still have balance issues at times. For two days after that treatment I felt the best I had
felt with barely a headache and no fatigue and I thought I was heading in the right direction in healing. Woke up yesterday with horrible headache that’s continuing!
I feel like people think it’s “just a concussion” get over it, but it’s a lot to deal with and causes a lot of depression and anxiety!

It is hard when there is uncertainty in what to do. I have been dealing with PCS for two years and have had several more in between then. I have been stuck with reoccurring symptoms and dealing with rehab for that time. It has been the one thing that has taught me the most about how to control my symptoms and allowed me to accept this as it is what it is. The best way they have described it to me is that there are three zones - Green, Yellow, Red - Green, you are in the clear. Yellow, your symptoms are starting to flare up and is a sign to stop and wait until you get back into the green (roughly 24 hours of being in the green again before you can resume normal function). Red, you have gone too far and that time frame makes recovery longer. I wear sunglasses the majority of the time and have screen settings set to colours of yellow that help my eyes on my electronics. It public I often wear headphones or silicone ear plugs that I can mold into my ears to block sound. So much of it relies on rest and that is the most challenging part because we often lead busy lives and it is hard to take that break. I have to have therapy with a mental health support worker twice a week especially once the symptoms flare up. It highly impacts my mood. To help with the dizziness for me I have learned that keeping focus on one thing while walking is the safest bet for me, often having to look at the ground or off in the distance. As for the migraines and headaches the only two things I have found that help are amitriptyline (this can also help with sleep) and topirimate. Prior to taking a DBT group I often got lost in the negatives the concussion left me and it truly does suck. I feel that my life revolves around my pink swirly box and when it is broken I get lost. Once I accepted as it is what it is, which is hard and I have to remind myself often, it does at points help in making it easier. That while hard and challenging it is something that can be overcome. Just hang in there and know you are not alone :)
