Traumatic brain injury occurs when a sudden trauma causes brain damage. TBI can result from a closed head injury or a penetrating head injury. Symptoms of a TBI can be mild, moderate, or severe, depending on the extent of the damage to the brain. Outcome can be anything from complete recovery to permanent disability or death. A coma can also affect a child's brain.
Hi all. I am new here and would like to share my story. In 1976 we were in Germany and I was hit by a car. It threw me in the air and I landed on my head. It dislocated my left leg and rammed it up through my pelvis (Which shattered) and into my ribs. I had a subdural hematoma (spelling) . While I was in a grand mal seizure I had a major stroke. I was paralyzed on my left side and lost 35% of my brain.
I continued to have seizures after I finally got out of the hospital, although the military didn't acknowledge them. I lost touch with reality and suffered intense mood swings, memory loss and trouble comprehending simple things. I am 45 now and so glad to find this site and others with the same problems. Not that I am glad you all have problems.
I finally checked myself into a mental hospital in 1990 and started treatment for depression, seizures and anxiety. The process of finding the right combination of meds was an ugly one but so worth it. Oh, I was in a coma for three days.

I do have to say that the treatments that you went through clearly did you a lot of good. Your thoughts are very organized - that is obvious from what you wrote in your post.
You most definitely give me a great deal of hope.
My first TBI was in 1993 - when an 18 foot, cast-iron light pole fell over and hit me squarely in the middle of my head. In 17 years I have been able to get most of my cognition back - I think.
In 2001 I had a brain hemorrhage as a result of an unfortunate situation - along with 5 broken ribs, a broken collar bone and a collapsed lung. While I have not come back totally from that one - I have hope.

For years I HATED my dad. Everytime I limped, everytime I didnt act normal he would hit me or pinch me or something that made me try harder.
I understand now that that had a lot to do with my rocovery. I got the physcal treatment that I needed from the military. But, sadly they did not work with me mentally or emotionally. I made many, many bad choices that stole my childhood. I finally checked into a mental hospital when I was 25 (1990) and started treatment for my seizures and depression. It has taken years to get where I am now.
And even now I am having problems with some of my new meds. Ugh. I hate this.
Just remember, if someone pushes you it is for the best. It hurts, it is hard, but it is soooo worth it.
