When can you drive properly after ruptured aneurys

Hello all

Thanks for any advice and persoanl experiences. My Dad had a ruptured aneurysm last July and and also had another aneursym clipped at the same time. He was discharged at the end of August - had many complications. Prob is that he lives in another country and they have told him not to drive for 1 year! He is lost without being able to drive and still does very short distances occasionally so not listening to the doctors totally. Now he wants to do a 6hour drive when I go and visit him.

I would like to know when you all took to the road again properly? 1 Year seems excessive to me. And looking on the net trying to find info - some people have said a few weeks to a few months.

Hi I had 7 aneurysms one which ruptured. I was never told not to drive. I didn't because I didn't feel comfortable with myself for about 6months. If your father bless his heart feels comfortable enough to drive I'd let him. He knows better than anyone respect him it will make him feel normal which is what we are all striving for!!

Thanks very much for your reply. It's nice to hear other peoples opinions.

I asked my dad why the doctors do not want him to drive for 1 year and he said he believes it could be becuase of his high blood pressure that they are worried about blackouts! It's difficult as he lives in India so communication isn't as it would be over here so explainations aren't to the full extent.

He gets tired alot so I just don't want him over-doing it and having an accident etc. Driving for 6 hours will be a challenge but I agree that he needs to feel normal again

I didn't drive for almost 3 yrs. They told me I had to take lessons and retest in order to drive. Well I couldn't afford to do what they wanted because Insurance didn't cover any of it. I knew I could drive without any issues at that point. So my BF at the time gave me his car keys and said go for it. I have been driving ever since. I even have my own car now. The longest drive I have done alone is 3 1/2 hrs. The driving restrictions are usually laid out due to what ever issues your having after onset of aneurysm. I had Periferial vission issues which would have mad an accident waiting to happen. I got cleqared on the vision issue from my Optamologist and am driving now.
