when i am upset i usually turn to books and writing and the ocean for comfort. what books give you comfort?
bible study workbook, gives me comfort and a sense of peace, it brings me outside of myself and into much bigger realms of soooo many things that i do not know and now its time to ponder about them. i love bible study.
if all i need is to be cheered up, i usually choose a rona jaffe novel or catcher in the rye of j.d. salinger.
if i need a different kind of peace, i use the anne of green gables series or the simplicity of the little house series by laura ingalls wilder. or the betsy-tacey series by maude lovelace. brings you to happiness without crowds and technology. totally cool.
If I am soul searching I read Jonathan Livingston Seagull by Richard Bach, feeling blue I love you forever and guess how much I love you. those are little children's books but they work everytime. Feeling whimsical Judy Blume, Are you there God it's me Margaret and Beverly Cleary's Dear Mr Henshaw. I also like Maya Angelou I know why the caged bird sings and Toni Morrison Song of Solomon. The Bible always works especially the book of Ruth my favorite book, Psalms and Proverbs.
Anne Of Green Gable series of books are great for comfort.
Biographys or autobiographys. Depends on who though,,some are not so comfortable stories.
Also I like to read fiction, or non-fiction history books of pioneers ladies on the covered wagon andf all the details of having a home on the prairie,,that is very comforting! makes me appreciate conveniences!
Emily Dickenson can be intense but her nature poems are comforting,,and the ocean,,river ones.
cookbooks and decorating books are comforting too.
atlas books, and phone books yellowpages also are comforting..
When I'm scared or upset, or out of books to read, or feeling poetic...I always return to The Last Unicorn by Peter S Beagle. The writing is so soothing, so beautiful. The poems are touching and the story quickly whisks you away and wraps you up.
Another is Listening for Our Song, edited by Margaret L. Beard Volume 4 of Collected Meditations
