Unaccepting family

When I came out to my parents neither of them took it seriously and still don't. My mum started joking around and asking which of my friends I had a "crush" on, and my dad told me that I'm not really bisexual and that I was "pulling an attention-seeking stunt" and that I was being immature. Is there anyone else who has had similar reactions to this and how did you deal with it?

I am not sure what to say, except sorry about the reaction and I wish people would really listen to their own kids and take them seriously. Being a parent I know it's a difficult transition to realizing they are not children anymore... For me I didn't tell anyone for so long that when I did they took it real serious because I was in such bad shape, so depressed and had dropped out of college... Maybe your family can learn to appreciate over time how positive it is that you are communicating openly with them... That is saying, "I trust you with the real me... what I am going through right now... If I feel like you guys aren't taking me seriously, then it's harder to talk to you...

I've never really had a good relationship with my family, especially my dad because he never takes anything I do seriously and whatever I do is never good enough for him. Everything that really affects me, such as my depression, whenever I'm ill, self harming, he says that I'm faking it all and just doing it for attention, and whever I try to sit down and talk with him seriously he just shouts at me and grounds me for "lying" :/

oh, that's terrible. ~hug~ i understand a little bit. when i came out to my sister, she repeatedly told me that i was actually straight, that it was a phase i was going through.

~sigh~ sometimes i wish family wasn't so... cruel.

yeah, my mum told me it was a phase too. Funny, it's a "phase" I've been going through for quite a while then. I don't see why it's so hard for people to accept?
