Are they football fans? Do they wear polyester? Do they eat shellfish? Seriously, they can throw bible verses at you. It's just as easy to throw bible verses back and reasonably explain that as human society has adapted and recognised that the bible is a collection of laws and fables constructed by those tasked with interpreting god's law (hence fallible as it's is marked by human intervention) we must accept that as society changes and becomes more welcoming and accepting the laws which govern our behaviour must also change. and that the supreme authority of the church (the pope) and the the supreme law of catholicism (which means universal) is basic - to love one another - that is Christ's supreme dictum. The rest is just wrapping. "Faith, Hope, and Love, and the greatest of these is Love" - Jesus didn't categorise that. He didn't put conditions on it. He said, Love comes first. End of story. It's human beings who added all the rest of the b.s. - including the laws of Leviticus 19:19- no polyester "You are to keep My statutes. You shall not breed together two kinds of your cattle; you shall not sow your field with two kinds of seed, nor wear a garment upon you of two kinds of material mixed together." (so um, genetically modified steak is out, too - if anyone in your family likes Outback or Longhorn). No gold or pearls (1 Timothy 2:9 doesn't like gold necklaces at all. Or pearl necklaces. Or any clothes they're wearing from Forever 21, Old Navy or H&M. "Likewise, I want women to adorn themselves with proper clothing, modestly and discreetly, not with braided hair and gold or pearls or costly garments." So if your mom shops at Macy's, she needs to make haste to the confessional. Again, the shellfish, Leviticus 11:10 reads, "But whatever is in the seas and in the rivers that does not have fins and scales among all the teeming life of the water, and among all the living creatures that are in the water, they are detestable things to you." And shellfish is right in that wheelhouse. Does your dad shave? See him in Hell, Leviticus 19:27 reads "You shall not round off the side-growth of your heads nor harm the edges of your beard." And if there's any traditional football fans (the old pigskin kind) or bacon-eaters in the family, well there's an argument for them, too as Leviticus 11:8, which is discussing pigs, reads "You shall not eat of their flesh nor touch their carcasses; they are unclean to you."

They may fling homophobia justified through the bible at you, but remind them that the ultimate commandment is to love. That you are being true to that commandment in seeking a loving relationship with them and with a partner you can respect and with whom you can share a life. Remind them, too, that god didn't make a mistake with you. You were created as you are - your being is sacred and beautiful and it is sacrilege to deny who you are. Many blessings.
