Zoloft... wtf

Hey all!

I was put on Zoloft two weeks ago starting dose was 25 mg and then upped to 50mg one week later.

I expected a decrease in sex drive since that is a side effect (and I was super afraid of this since I have a healthy active sex drive).

But I notice it has made me extremely horny (sorry lol) And I don't know if its the Zoloft or if its an interaction with my other medication Neurontin. Not familiar with SSRIs so I don't know what to expect here!

I meant to add that I literally cannot stop fantasizing about sex. I even have to clench my legs together at my desk at work it gets so bad lol

Gosh, I wish I knew! I'm on so many antidepressants that I no longer have a sex drive!

hi, it might be the start of hypomania.

You are on odd meds for bipolar.

Usually people with bipolar aren't given anti-depressents without also taking either a mood stabilizer or antipsychotic.SSRIs even if you are on one of those can be a risk.

Neurotin is neither a mood stabilizer or anti-psychotic, the medical studies suiggest it might be useful in combination with proper bipolar meds to help with anxiety - other studies have shown it as no more effective as a placebo.

I'd talk to your doctor.

acurio: I am on zoloft because I suffer with Severe PMDD. My Neurontin works great for my bipolar and moods. I sleep great, I function better, I have a better outlook on life. I'm just surprised at how "frisky" I've been feeling since the zoloft. I will bring it up to my doctor at my next visit.

That's interesting. I had absolutely the opposite experience with Zoloft, it made me so I couldn't have an orgasm and I eventually went off it for that reason.

I still remember the older male doctor asking me why "that was a problem." My orgasms are important to me, even as the college student that I was back then.

Wellbutrin made me more sexual and then there's just good old fashioned mania which you may be experiencing.

I agree with acuriousfish. SSRIs for bipolar can increase symptoms of mania/hypomania, including increased sex drive. This is usually not a good treatment option for Bipolar. Definitely let your dr know that you're having those side effects; I would encourage you to try something else... Idk if you have any experience with mania/hypomania, but it can definitely spin your life out of control really fast and can be dangerous (impulsive/risky behaviors, sabotaging relationships, losing a job, etc.). I wish you the very best!!!

I think it is driving you into hypomania and if not taken care of now you may become full blown manic. I was on topamax and was the same way. I ended up in the hospital and was incoherent and beligerent by that time. You definitely don't want that. Zoloft did not work for me. I was hallucinating on it and was awake for 8 days straight. I became manic instantly on it then went into psychosis and it was scary as hell.

    I find myself going places in the car and not wanting to get out of the car. I come back home and I don't want to get out of the car. I think it's the only time I spend reflecting. Chronic tiredness from Long Covid plus the immunosupressing meds for my Crohn's is slowing me down but everything just seems a massive effort.     Wow, it's the middle of the week already!Today is our 11 year anniversary, so we're going out to a nice dinner.  I'm losing a lot of sleep these days, hence a wonky schedule and uncomfortable feelings.  But I know it will pass, eventually.I hope all of you have a peaceful day, and may good things come your way!
