Anyone ever try ranitidine (zantac) for weight loss? My pdoc suggested it, said it would help with weight gain associated with AAPs and was safe to take with the other meds I'm on. I've never heard of zantac for weight loss. Everything I read about it says it doesnt cause weight loss, but when I read about studies on the effects of it along with AAPs it does cause weight loss. Maybe a result of the 2 taken together?

Once again I've had a fever today. I'm not going to the hospital because that's a huge waste of time but I did schedule a dr appointment for Wednesday afternoon.

"Common side effects associated with the use of Zantac include nausea, vomiting, difficulty sleeping, dizziness, decreased sex drive and stomach pain. Severe or serious side effects include vision problems, yellowing of the skin or eyes, irregular heart rate, shortness of breath, chest pain and blistering or peeling skin accompanied by a rash. If you begin to experience serious side effects, seek immediate medical attention.
While Zantac has no relation to weight loss, certain conditions that would warrant this type of medication could cause weight loss. In this type of instance, it’s the condition that’s causing the weight loss, not the medication. If you suffer from acid reflux or peptic ulcers, it may be painful or difficult for you to eat. Certain foods, such as tomato-based sauces, spicy nachos or hot wings, may be unpleasant as they can increase stomach acid. When stomach acid is increased, the acids can easily backflow into your esophagus and cause vomiting, burning of the throat, coughing and pain. This may cause unintentional weight loss, especially if you experience these symptoms after almost every meal. You may eat less food than you normally did or smaller quantities."
If your gastric system is healthy, you have to ask yourself, "what does this do to my body if I take this medication?" Pdocs rarely ask or answer that question when they toss out a suggestion like this. Your gastric system has to have a constant production of stomach acid, like a car with oil, it makes all the parts work. If you block the production of that acid by long term use of Zantac, you can create problems like Low Magnesium and Potassium levels.
Make sure you have all the facts before you jump into an OTC medication that seems harmless. All these meds have long term effects on the body in some way....
As a person with a f'ed up Gastric System, past esophageul cancer and having had multiple surgeries for all of it. I took Zantac for years, when it was the big new medication, never lost a pound. So agreeing with Fish, its probably more indicitive of the newer AAP's, and you'd have to pair the right medication with the Zantac to get the desired effect. Then you'd have to stay on both meds for....always? because as soon as you stopped the Zantac, the AAP's would resort back to causing the weight gain. That doesn't sound like an optimal solution to me.
Just my 2 cents.....
And cper, you're right, safe to take with AAPs doesnt mean completely safe with no side effects or long term problems.
