Bipolar disorder is not just a single disorder, but a category of mood disorders marked by periods of abnormally high energy and euphoria, often accompanied by bouts of clinical depression. I have been invited to sit for a job interview tomorrow morning.
Pros ;
- Productive challenging work with some degree of the personal reward of a job well done
- Relatively handsome salary
- Certainly the opportunity to get 'back on my feet'
- Generally working on my own, and not so much unnecessary interaction with co-workers, be they friend or foe
- Company vehicle (service truck) to take on calls, and at home to receive calls through the night
- Being productively employed will likely do wonders for my self-esteem
- I shall likely still have time for a certain hobby, perhaps to turn that into an alternative source of income
- I've not done this type of work before, but done similar, MUCH more complex work with infinitely higher responsibilities. This should be a breeze to master and I shall very likely be quite successful and upwardly mobile
Cons:
- How long will I last with BP? I am RELATIVELY stable just now, but dunno how long it will last, and therefor how long my employment will last
- I shall have to suspend my disability claim (I think - someone please inform me on this matter if you can)
- Too many night calls may take a certain toll on my well-being
- Some, or perhaps most calls will force me to be outdoors, exposed to the elements. Definitely not a 'desk job' LOL!
- I'll likely have to buy quite a few tools, some small equipment, and coverall uniforms (cost now MAY be an issue, even though they will all be tax-deductible)
So, I know I can do the job, and the pros seem to outweigh the cons, I'm just afraid of letting my BP get out of hand.

But at the very least, you'd be by yourself a lot so maybe if you got a bit manic or depressed, people wouldn't notice it so much. Plus you get the added benefit of less triggering.
The night work thing sounds like it may be problematic but perhaps you could work with your boss to make sure you're not up too late?
The being outdoors thing actually sounds nice to me.
Can the company provide any tools or uniforms (you've probably already looked into that)
I think you are a positive, constructive person and I think you can handle it. I'd just monitor yourself a lot to keep things under control so stress doesn't build up. Also, obviously the sleep issue would be a biggie.

I dunno about uniforms, I presume to buy a bunch of coveralls and perhaps sew on their company emblems.
Whatever the case, I'll not purchase anything until I have an offer in hand. :)
After investigating, I am thinking the night calls to be somewhat rare, the bulk of my time being spent doing the routine maintenance as opposed to emergency repairs, but they shall also occur from time-to-time.

I gave a rock-solid interview, laid bare my strengths and weaknesses without hesitation or reservation. The hiring guy is a USMC Veteran, so being a Navy vet myself, I was able to quickly build good rapport. I let him know that I could do the deed, and would do so with the highest diligence, efficiency, attention to detail - as if I were still a paramedic treating a human patient.
If hired, I will do a three-day evaluation period with his top man who will judge my abilities and render a "go/no-go" whether I'm a "keeper".
I went ahead and bought a coverall for this purpose, and even if I don't get the job, I'll still have my coverall for stuff around the house, or other "dirty work".
I bought a few items to practice my engraving, and a couple gifts to engrave for some friends, and then treated myself to a wonderful seafood dinner, and now chilling with a nice Cali Cabernet.
The hiring manager said he had a few more interviews, and will likely let me know by next week.
Meanwhile, it's all in God's hands now. I can't lose. Either he hires me or finds a more qualified individual for the position. Win-win for both of us. Hes gets the best person for the job, and either I get a job, or am not put in a job I might not be the best fit for. and so no matter what happens, everybody is a winner.

Sounds like a good oppurtinity. I hope you get the job. As for Disability Claims, You can't make above 1000.00. But otherwise good luck and hopefully you will get another interview!
I admire your logic and attitude. It sounds like you're taking this step confidently yet realistically. I hope it works out beautifully for you. Also know that, should you take the position yet later discover that it's not quite the right match, know that it is perfectly OK to make a change in direction.
