Just curiuos, at the end of this month my medicaid runs out and unless they renew it I will not have any insurane for 2 years on SSDI. It is so odd that you can be on disablity but not have insurance. I honestly don't understand that concept at all.
I have called around and not insurance provider will give any type of coverage to someone with bipolar disorder even if you list it as pre existing and for them not to cover the meds or anything relating to the BP disorder.
What the crap.
I thought SSDI would help me of course income wise it is, but what if I have a heart attack? I guess I will just be as healthy as possible..
Pray that I can keep Medicaid till Medicare kicks in .. Please Thank You .. Nick

I won't qualify for Medicare untill Oct..I have been on SSDI..All of my medical expences have been out of pocket.Thank God my Pdoc can give me samples of some of the meds.But I recently calculated ,that my medical expences use approx 30% of my income.
And once you Do qualify for Medicare..a portion of your monthly income will be taken out to cover medical expencces!
Most likely you will have a 20% deductable,and if you get RX AND Doctors services both...they will take out more!
By the way,since you have been DX as bipolar,I don't know of ANY medical insurance that will accept you,unless the premiums are so high,you couldn't afford it anyway...AND no Life Insurance Co,will accept you either.
Ain't it just a joy to try and negotiate your way around the system?!!
Insurance comes in the form of the National Health Service in the UK, the NHS celebrates 60 years this July.
It is designed to profit from illness!
As for no insurance, I finally have Medicare, but my pdoc told me not to use it because it would cost me more to see him, and would not cover counseling at the mental health center...
I have had it since Dec 2006 and use the free clinics whenever possible. In return, I make contributions to their foundations and have made them the beneficiary of my life insurance policy.
Wonder why no insurance company will cover bipolar people not mental health but just your physical?

Mental Health is still relatively 'new' to the healthcare system and the NHS in the UK for Mental Health is known as the Cinderella Service, due to the meagre amount of money & resources it is run with.....unlike physical health.
