First off, excuse me if I sound harsh but this has been on my mind lately and for a long time. Even found myself ranting out loud to my boyfriend the frustrations of this.
BP is becoming more accepted in society. Yet so many people have this (ridiculous) fear of telling someone or being "outed". I love myself. I have nothing to hide. Besides BP I have other problems and honestly I'm proud to feel comfortable with myself to talk about my issues.
It shouldn't NEVER be your problem if people cannot accept you for WHO YOU ARE and what problems you may have. I don't think it's necessary for anyone to be so damned scared of letting people know. YES, it's okay to be private but I suggest you aren't private simply out of fear. No one can be completely comfortable with you until you are with yourself and it's one thing I have learned that has helped me along this life. You can hide yourself forever, if you do, you'll be alone. How can you be trusted if you can trust? Why bother living if you are constantly afraid? How could you put yourself through that?

It's so stupid, so fucking sad as all hell to read people bitch and complain on every forum or chat or WHATEVER about talking about their conditions. GET OVER IT. Because what you have is for life. It's forever. There's no cure for BP so get used to it is what I'm saying. Love yourself for YOU. Although it may not be easy, it's something we all have to deal with because yeah, we die alone, we are responsible for ourselves, we cannot put blame on things we cannot control.
So...Why do you bother with worrying or being scared? You are doing the best you can for you! Others shouldn't ever matter. Their opinions of you and your condition do not make you who you are. It's you. If they can't support you, there is another one who will if you want it.

So you know all of the answers and everybody else is "fucking sad a hell"?
I'd advise you to open your eyes and your heart and walk a mile in somebody else's shoes before you come down on them so hard.
Oh, and I'm in the closet about my bipolar. The hard fact for many of us is that there is still a great deal of misunderstanding about mental illness, and a great deal of resulting discrimination. So, many of us don't have the luxury of coming out, we have to feed ourselves.

l tell the people who l trust about my bp and no one else because its no one elses bloody business
as for the 'fear' some beepers have, welcome to the real world full of people who don't/won't/can't be arsed to understand and are looking for a reason to feel superior by putting us down in life/work/relationships. Some managers would sack us if they knew or try to find a way to get us out.
live another 20yrs and then speak again l wonder if you would think or feel the same way l doubt it. Life is hard enough without feeling undermind for how we choose to cope with our own personal private situations without being ragged on by someone who should empathise.

Most of those I value in my life and who need to know about my BP do. Other than that, it is no one else's business.
I have been let go from jobs and forced out of school because they became aware of my BP, and the folks who did this were people who worked in the mental health professions, which is where you will encounter much bias, unfortunately.
As I have to put food on my table for myself and my pets, it is best I keep this business to myself.
