Bipolar Disorder Support Group
Bipolar disorder is not just a single disorder, but a category of mood disorders marked by periods of abnormally high energy and euphoria, often accompanied by bouts of clinical depression. This is the place to talk about your experience with bipolar disorder, learn from others' experiences, and find support.
You can even tell/ask your doc that you would like to try the PRN meds for a day or two to see if you can get it stopped. Or maybe they can give you a increase of your mood stabilizer.
Now I am going to tell you what I do otherwise and what I have learned has helped me..
Don't go out of your house unless you absolutely have to.
Take your PRN, play soothing music or neutral type television show, turn the lights down. You don't want to stimulate yourself.
Rest. Stay away from caffine, alcohol and any drugs. Get extra sleep.
And ride it thru. You'll be fine if you do what you must. I know that the pdoc agrees with me doing the above activities. She knows that you must stay as calm as you can in a restful enviroment.
I put the coffee away.....couldn't finish it because this energy surge hit me outta nowhere. This happens to me often and thought I never go into full blown mania I do get pretty "high" and get crazily overproductive. Some days I can harness it and make beautiful crafty items!!!! Other days are just nadda :-(
I do make rash decisions at times...spend a bit too much, like right now I feel like heading to the craft store and buying all these fun colors of yarns in oranges and reds and make some bags!! Walmart sucks as far as their colors go, the only thing keeping me from going is I'm scared to drive in the rain that far away from the homestead though very tempted!!
Thanks for all the good advice but I have to say nah to calling the pdoc he will just tell me to medicate myself with a seroquel and then I will become overlysedated and very sad and I don't want to get pissed off today! I am listening to some music and going to make some oatmeal right now, sorry for the rambling! Thanks again though, very good advice!
I think since you said you don't have full blown manic attacks or just haven't had one yet you don't realize have destructive they are. So if you don't come down soon make sure you get less stimulation etc.
I say this because hypomania does go into mania for me and I hate going to the hospital. Plus my daughter needs me that is why I take it so seriously. Anyways just try and stay mindful of your activities and if you find yourself becoming risky call and talk to your doctor..the doctor isn't the final word. You and the doctor work together.
I'm keeping busy but being careful not to rush through things....I have to catch myself or else I will go through the house like a tornado and that is when I tend to get the agitation.
I've had full blown mania in the past, it's been a number of years and have had a few hospitalizations because I got waaay out of control, so most definitely do not want to go there again! I'm laying low for the most part and took a klonopin. Staying busy yet mindful is going to be my best bet for today!!!
Eventually , it's an all over thing
i agree with the PRN thing, as long as you know, might as well get it under control.
I don't think I've ever gone into mania, just periods of hypomania, but I feel energy surges in my chest, and then I can get goosebumps, colours seem sharper, lights sometimes brighter and I get sensory overload.
